The Department of Nursing began in 1992 as a RN-BSN completion program. A BSN pre-licensure program was added in 2005.
In 2013, three MSN tracks began with focuses on Clinical Nursing Leader (CNL), Clinical Prevention and Population Health, and Nurse Educator. Soon followed the option to continue from diploma or associate degree straight through to MSN with the RN-MSN pathway. The Department of Nursing became the McKenzie-Elliott School of Nursing (SON) in 2021 and remains under the College of Health Sciences. Most recently, the McKenzie-Elliott SON received approval to initiate UNCP's first doctoral degree program, the DNP in Population Health, which began in Spring 2024.
The SON is well known in the community and surrounding areas as a trusted partner and program. We utilize several clinical sites to provide outreach services and expose students to various levels of need.
In 2021, the SON added two mobile units to aid in these areas. The SON prides itself on quality student experiences that meet the needs of learners at all levels. We grow our own faculty with many starting at the MSN level and completing terminal degrees while working full time. We are committed to moving at the speed of trust!
