Job Description

Clinical faculty members in Sign Language Studies teach American Sign Language classes and related courses for majors, minors, concurrent enrollment, and other students, which may be in-person, hybrid, and online, based on current needs and safety protocols. Clinical faculty members serve as ambassadors of Sign Language Studies (SLS), Sign Language Interpreting (SLI), and the Deaf Education programs on the Pocatello campus. Through dedication and expertise, clinical faculty members contribute to the growth and success of the SLS and SLI programs while fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching: Teach classes in American Sign Language and related courses for the Sign Language Studies (SLS) and Sign Language Interpreting (SLI) programs.

Administration: Prepare university assessment reports of the general education sign language courses.

Demonstrate professional and ethical behavior: Exemplify professional and ethical behavior in all interactions with students, colleagues, and the community.

Serve on committees: Serve on program, department, college, university, and professional committees, contributing to decision-making processes and actively engaging in the academic community.

Contribute to curriculum development: Participate in developing and implementing academic curricula, ensuring the integration of current best practices.

Engage in public and professional service activities: Participate in public service activities within the college, university, and the broader community, representing the department and promoting its mission.

Assist in student recruitment and retention: Collaborate with the department to recruit and retain students, share program information, and foster a supportive learning environment.

Student advisor role: Serve as an undergraduate student advisor, guiding students in their academic and professional pursuits.

Conduct creative/scholarly activities: Engage in creative and scholarly activities relevant to Sign Language Studies.

Complete department and program assignments: Fulfill other department and program-related duties as assigned by the department chair or program director.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Native proficiency in ASL
  • Potential interest to become ASLTA-Certified
  • Potential for excellence in teaching
  • Good interpersonal skills and collaborative abilities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in ASL or related field
  • Two years or more experience teaching at the college or university level
  • Experience or interest in curriculum development and evaluation
  • ASLPI rating of 5

This position will remain open until it is filled; however, priority consideration will be given to applications received on or before December 31, 2024. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
