Position Summary

The University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking candidates for the role of Surgical and Clinical Skills instructor. The successful candidate will hold a 12-month position as Clinical Assistant or Clinical Associate Professor, depending on experience.

The successful applicant will join and work with the Office of Academic Affairs team, including the Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, the Assistant Deans for Pre-Clinical and Clinical Academic Affairs, and the Director of the Clinical Skills Laboratory. Additionally, they will work closely with the surgery faculty in the Departments of both Large Animal Medicine and Small Animal Medicine and Surgery, and support staff members in the Office of Academic Affairs, including three technicians.

The academic focus for the position is to develop and manage the surgery curriculum in conjunction with the surgery faculty and the clinical skills laboratory director. Applicants must be highly innovative and motivated to advancing surgical and general clinical skills instruction, including learning and assessment.

As time permits, the successful applicant will participate in instruction of other aspects of clinical and professional skills. Furthermore, participation in teaching primary care clinical medicine in the Community Practice Rotation in the University Pet Health Center is possible depending on the candidate's experience. Participation in scholarly activity regarding evidence-based veterinary medical education as a collaborative investigator is encouraged.

The successful applicant is expected to possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, be organized and team-oriented, and be adaptable to a wide variety of circumstances. The successful candidate is expected to maintain a valid Georgia veterinary license (regular or faculty) and be eligible for a State of Georgia driver's license.

The successful applicant will join and work with a clinical skills team comprising three technicians, the clinical skills laboratory director, and the surgery faculty from the Departments of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery and Large Animal Medicine. The faculty and staff in the Office of Academic Affairs will support the position.

Experiences that would contribute to the position's success include private clinical practice, academic clinical practice, particularly in a clinical skills laboratory, and academic administration. Board certification is not necessary.

Additional Requirements

To be considered for the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor (Non-Tenure Track), candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree and a minimum of 2 years post-DVM experience, 4 years or more strongly preferred. Candidates should show evidence of a high level of competence and demonstrate the promise of moving toward excellence in student instruction and scholarly activity.

To be considered for the rank of Clinical Associate Professor (Non-Tenure Track) the candidate is expected to have at least nine years of post-DVM experience including five years clinical teaching experience in an academic environment. Candidates should have a minimum of five years at the rank of clinical assistant professor or comparable experience.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification

Prior history in both private practice and in clinical instruction is desirable. Prior history in academia is advantageous, but not essential.

Furthermore, an advanced degree, particularly in an education-related discipline is advantageous.

The successful applicant is expected to possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, be organized and team-oriented, and be adaptable to a wide variety of circumstances.

Practical knowledge and ability to perform diagnostic, surgical, and therapeutic techniques commonly used in general practice.

Knowledge of general medical teaching practices including learning and assessment
