Job Description:

The Clinical Assistant is an integral part of the health care team at Health Services that serves a diverse student population at Roger Williams University. The Clinical Assistant is responsible for a wide variety of clinical and administrative duties under the direction of the Director of Health Services.

Essential Functions / Characteristics

Monitors and manages patient flow from check-in to discharge.

Obtains and records vital signs, patient chief complaints, update allergies, and review medications.

Completes and provides appropriate anticipatory testing measures and supplies.

Performs waived tests and administer flu vaccines when indicated.

Performs suture removal and phlebotomy as directed by medical providers.

Ensures that patient completes clinic forms that are specific to a visit.

Completes intake of urgent patients and presents case and patient to registered nurse or medical providers.

May assist with routine medical procedures, as appropriate to training and/or certification.

Stocks exam rooms with medical supplies daily or more frequently if needed. Sets up exam rooms with appropriate supplies for visit type.

Stocks administrative forms in the central supply area.

Restocks urine supplies in patient bathrooms.

Cleans microscope and waived test area.

Cleans exam room surfaces and organizes work spaces in compliance with infection control protocols.

Sterilizes/disinfects medical instruments in compliance with infection control protocols.

Assists medical provider with individual patient needs (crutch training, nebulizer treatment, etc.).

Performs specific tests as requested by medical provider to include EKG's, visual acuity screening, and waived diagnostic tests.

Sets up for procedures such as I&D, suturing and assists provider as indicated.

Communicates to provider by flag system and/or verbal feedback on patient flow.

Assists provider with processing patient referrals and referral tracking for continued coordination of care.

Schedules appointments.

Process release of information forms.

Performs daily medical refrigerator/freezer temperature checks and documents completion in log.

Performs daily/monthly emergency supply check per protocol and documents completion.

Assists in maintaining the cleanliness and serviceability of medical equipment; arranges for maintenance and repair as needed.

Prepares bio-hazardous waste for pick-up in compliance with infection control protocols.

Orders and maintains clinical supply inventory.

Screens and enters immunizations, tracks compliance with required health forms, and sends weekly emails to students who are missing data or are non-compliant with health requirements.

Handles filing, copying, faxing and related office duties.

Serve as backup for receptionist as needed.

This is a full-time (40 hours) PSSA Level 3 Clerical Union position.

Requirements:

High School Diploma or GED.

Completion of an accredited program with diploma, certificate, or associate's degree in medical assisting, or similar.

A minimum of one to two years clinical experience or relevant work experience as a clinical assistant in a clinic.

Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.

Ability to provide culturally competent care to a diverse population.

Demonstrated ability and willingness to work in and support a diverse and inclusive environment.

Orientation towards quality customer service.

Computer efficiency and experience working with electronic health records.

Preferred Qualifications

CPR certification.

Clinical assistant certification by the American Association of Clinical Assistants AAMA).

At the University's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be excepted where the candidate can demonstrate, to the satisfaction of the University, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
