Responsibilities

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Under general direction and with latitude for independent judgment, the Research Assistant will maintain and analyze a prospective database in breast surgical oncology, perform chart reviews, and maintain a portfolio of research projects.

The primary purpose of this position is to create and maintain a retrospective and prospective database consisting of breast cancer specialty clinic patients. This position is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of information transcribed from each of these patient charts into electronic data capture systems which consists of clinical, pathologic, radiographic, treatment and treatment outcomes data. Ensures protocol compliance per Office for Human Subject Protection (OHSP), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), institutional guidelines and standard operating procedures (SOPs) set forth by the University of Rochester. This position is much more than just database creation, though. This assistant will perform chart reviews for other retrospective projects, working closely with clinicians to advance the field of breast cancer. They will manage a portfolio of projects, tracking their status (IRB approval, chart review completion, analysis phase, and so on), and will be included as an author on successful publications.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Enters data pertaining to breast surgical oncology patients into a web-based database

  • Using existing resources, create a database for the Breast section (at Pluta) of the Department of Surgery for purposes of clinical research and quality improvement

  • Capture clinical and other performance or management data from several systems to create this database

  • Properly back up and assure accessibility to the database for users in conjunction with existing resources within CTSI and ISD

  • Maintain the database on a regular basis and assure its accuracy and integrity

Creates and Analyzes Reports from the Database 35%

  • Create and distribute regular reports that can be used by the Faculty and Surgical Oncology team

  • Utilize data to develop ad hoc reports and Quality databases

  • Work with Breast Chief and others to identify and fulfill data needs

  • When projects are IRB approved and data is requested, will provide this data in legible table formats, as requested by the researcher

Maintains database of IRB Approvals

  • Track the IRB status of submitted projects, to support the clinical research team in conducting ethical research

Professional Development

  • Keeps abreast of trends as they relate to the computer field by self-study, attending job related seminars, courses or conferences which enhance personal development and strengthen the user service function.

Other

  • May include presentation of seminars, courses, and instruction on computer services as needed

  • Depending on each applicant's goals, presentation at medical and/or surgical conferences can be arranged

Other projects and job duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree required.

  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.

  • Prior experience in higher education, academic research and grants administration preferred.

  • Strong interpersonal, presentation and communication skills, including written communication preferred.

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and problem-solving ability preferred.

  • Highly collaborative, works well in teams preferred.

  • Analytical, spreadsheet development and analysis, and technical skills, including thorough familiarity with MS Office suite preferred.

  • Understands and follows simple research protocols and procedures preferred.

  • Fully adheres to applicable safety and/or infection control standards preferred.

  • Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint preferred.

  • Proficient in MS Office (e.g. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), email, internet preferred.

  • Previous experience with RedCap preferred.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $ 20.92 - $ 29.29 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
