Purpose/Objective of Position:

Design, create, plan, implement and evaluate the RSOP Climbing Program. Support the mission and activities of UMD RSOP through whole-unit, campus, and community involvement. To meet the demands and expectations of this position, work hours will vary greatly from day to day, week to week and season to season.

Major Job Functions:

Program Development (20%):

  • Develop and coordinate climbing programing, workshops and certification courses

  • Direct the completion of marketing and information materials for the climbing program

  • Utilize recreation management software to administer the climbing program

  • Contribute to the RSOP team by assisting and working with individuals from multiple ethnic and cultural backgrounds including but not limited to differing race, color, creed, religion, national origin, gender, age, marital status, disability, public assistance status, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.

Program Planning (20%):

  • Create, review, and coordinate climbing program offerings and activity schedules

  • Arrange, confirm, and facilitate on-campus climbing facility usage and off-campus climbing program agreements

  • Create, monitor, assess and update all policies and practices pertaining to the climbing program

  • Collaborate on the supervision and management of a low-ropes course on campus

  • Collaborate with RSOP staff to create, monitor, assess and update all policies, guidelines, procedures for departmental initiatives and offerings

Student Supervision (25%):

  • Supervise the climbing program staff of RSOP to include creation of job descriptions, hire, train and instruct, assign work, evaluate performance, reward, and discipline

  • Coordinate climbing program student staff development, training and events

Instruction, Training & Assessment (15%):

  • Lead/instruct rock and ice climbing workshops and trainings

  • Teach academic courses related to rock climbing each semester, up to two credits per semester

  • Collaborate with fellow RSOP Professional staff in developing and conducting RSOP Student Staff learning opportunities

  • Assess student participation and learning within the climbing program

Risk Management (10%):

  • Create, update, teach, and monitor program safety and manage risk as it pertains to the climbing program

  • Take a leadership role in coordinating outdoor programming protocols and procedures for risk management.

Fiscal Management and Planning (10%):

  • Oversight of climbing program related equipment inventory, budget and finances

  • Provide facility management and planning associated with UMD's two indoor climbing wall facilities

  • Collaborate with local and regional climbing managers to ensure access and use of outdoor climbing sites

  • Participate in long-range planning and events for RSOP

  • Represent RSOP on campus and community committees and external collaborations

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree plus at least two years of experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal at least six years

  • Demonstrated experience facilitating indoor and outdoor climbing programming

  • Leadership and supervisory skills to hire, train, supervise and evaluate student employees as demonstrated through past supervision of staff.

  • Demonstrated experience with the proper use of safety equipment and risk management practices associated with indoor and outdoor climbing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in relevant field

  • American Red Cross CPR /First Aid or another wilderness medical certification

  • AMGA Rock Instructor or other national Single Pitch Instructor certification

  • National Climbing Wall Instructor certification

  • USA Climbing Level 1 Route Setter certification and/or demonstrated experience route setting for both bouldering and roped climbing.

  • Demonstrated experience with Ice Climbing fundamentals and programming.
