Position Description:
This position supports the Convergence Lab Initiative (CLI) program. Majority of CLI research and engineering work is performed in the Virginia Microelectronics Center (VMC) which is housed in the College of Engineering (West Hall) on VCU's Monroe Park Campus. The VMC includes more than 8,000 square feet of Class-100 and Class-1000 cleanroom space and a suite of micro- and nanofabrication state-of-the-art tools. All equipment and cleanroom space are maintained by expert staff. The CLI program uses the VMC core facility for R&D. The VCU ECE department is seeking a Process Engineer to support CLI R&D being performed at the VMC facility.
The Cleanroom Process Engineer will provide technical assistance, assist with equipment training, and support cleanroom facility best practices to ensure continuous operation of a state-of-the-art research facility for the Convergence Lab Initiative. The process engineer will support the CLI program by supporting and maintaining the operation of instruments and equipment in the cleanroom, such as performing preventative maintenance, corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, improvements, upgrades, and installations. The Process Engineer will work with other cleanroom staff to support the daily operations, maintenance of the cleanroom capabilities and training necessary for all members of the CLI program. They will also be communicating effectively with all CLI Students, Postdocs, Faculty, and Research Scientists to align their research requirements with the cleanroom's capabilities to properly support ongoing and future research projects being developed under the CLI program.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities Include:
Perform any and all training for users as needed
Perform instrument and equipment preventative maintenance, corrective maintenance, and troubleshooting along with instrument/equipment improvements, upgrades, and new installs
Coordinate with suppliers/vendors/university facilities team for service and troubleshooting as needed
Collaborate with CLI/VMC and university faculty/staff to assess, innovate, ensure project success, and enhance project development as required
Identify and manage resources (supplies, parts, IT) to effectively support cleanroom operations and project completion
Amend and develop new processes for improving efficiency and overall cost reduction
Develop, maintain, and inventory process/instrument related documents
Monitor and analyze all related data to improve and maintain instrument performance and address all instrument-related issues
Ensure compliance with health and safety standards
Mentor undergraduate CLI students and summer research activities
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree and one-year related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Practical knowledge and application of electronics, mechanics, vacuum theory, math, and computers
Knowledge of basic computer skills and software such as Microsoft Office programs (Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc.…) and Google Suite applications
Knowledge of troubleshooting techniques, ability to learn the operational concepts of systems, and how to perform diagnostic and troubleshooting techniques to solve more complex operational and system problems
Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, pneumatic diagrams, flow charts, and cause and effect diagrams
Must be detail-oriented, have effective communication skills, self-motivated, self-starter, and can work either independently or as a part of a team. Must be a team player
Must be a problem solver as well as a decision-maker
