Cleaners perform a wide range of cleaning tasks to maintain assigned areas in State buildings and surrounding grounds and walkways. Incumbents work independently or as part of a cleaning team in a variety of settings, such as administrative offices, classrooms, hospitals, laboratories, living, treatment, and other work areas.

Performs a variety of cleaning tasks in assigned areas.

  • Collects and empties trash and recycling in accordance with cleaning schedules; cleans and/or removes hazardous or misplaced items, waste, and spills; and disposes, transports, or places such in appropriate receptacles and locations, following proper cleaning procedures.

  • Assembles cleaning carts according to assigned tasks; and prepares, mixes, and dilutes cleaning solutions following manufacturer directions.

  • Washes floors, corridors, stairwells, walls, partitions, and windows using mops, detergents, brushes, and other cleaning devices.

  • Vacuums, strips, and waxes floors, and shampoos carpets, using manual or mechanical equipment.

  • Scrubs and cleans showers and restrooms, including toilets, sinks, and drains, using hand-operated equipment and cleaning agents.

  • Replaces light bulbs, and dusts or washes light fixtures and high places, such as ceilings, using ladders, other appropriate equipment, and tools.

  • Polishes wood and metal surfaces, fixtures, furniture, and equipment.

  • Monitors cleaning supplies and equipment; and notifies supervisor of supply levels, equipment malfunction, and/or maintenance issues observed during cleaning.

  • Replaces, cleans, and/or hangs building fixtures and decorative items, such as curtains, blinds, and pictures.

  • Moves, and arranges furniture and equipment in connection with cleaning tasks or in preparation for meetings, events, and other activities.

May be required to follow specialized disinfectant, waste disposal, and cleanliness standards in performing cleaning tasks; removing snow and salt walkways; cleaning sidewalks, drives, and grounds; mowing lawns, using mechanical and manual equipment; performing routine laundry tasks; and changing bed linens.

The SUNY Purchase College campus is considered to be the employee's work location. An employee can be assigned to work in any area(s) of Purchase College (ex. dorms, academic buildings, non-academic buildings, etc.). Assignment(s) can also be split to include multiple work areas.

Qualifications

Candidates may be required to work overtime. Position works a 5-day work schedule (may include working Saturday and Sunday) with 2 pass days. Work schedule to be determined by management.

Non-Competitive: must be physically able to perform medium to heavy physical labor and

understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL - Note that all classified employees assigned to the Grounds, Custodial, Heating/Plumbing, Electrical, Automotive, and Maintenance Trades Departments are deemed to be essential employees. In the event of an emergency, essential employees are required to report to work as scheduled and remain at work, if needed, based on the operational needs of Purchase College.
