Middle and Upper School Debate Teacher and Coach

Begins August 2024

Pembroke Hill School seeks a full-time upper and middle school speech and debate teacher with experience competing in and coaching interpretation events, Public Forum debate, and/or policy debate. This role will work closely with the two upper school co-directors of speech and debate in the classroom and at tournaments to support the Pembroke Hill debate program.

The candidate should have a passion for interacting with middle and upper school students in and outside of the classroom and an ability to thrive in a collaborative work environment that values innovation and creativity. A sense of humor and a positive and ambitious attitude are highly desirable. Candidates must be able to use technology to enhance the classroom experience and to use a range of resources that represent diverse experiences, viewpoints, and a passion for teaching.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education.

• Prior middle and/or upper school experience is preferable.

• Strong technology skills, including emerging technologies and the use of technology to enhance the educational program required.

• Proven ability to collaborate among teaching staff.

• Proven ability to connect and engage with young learners.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead the middle school speech and debate team as middle school head coach.

• Serve as Assistant Director of Debate for the upper school debate team.

• Teach 2-3 sections of middle school speech and debate.

• Assist with 1- 4 sections of upper school speech and debate each semester.

• Collaborate with the upper school speech and debate directors to build a program supporting students transitioning from middle to upper school debate.

• Tournament scheduling, planning, and communication for middle school competitions.

• Head coach of the middle school debate team, including attending 4-6 debate competitions.

• Supervise and assist with approximately 20 upper school tournament dates throughout the competition season as well as state and national tournaments.

• Communicate with students and families regarding debate tournaments and practices.=
