POSITION: Elementary School Special Education Teacher
Qualifications Required:
Bachelor's degree in Special Education or a related field (Master's degree preferred)
Connecticut State Certification as a Special Education Teacher
Strong understanding of various disabilities and their impact on learning
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Patience, flexibility, and a passion for working with children with diverse learning needs
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate
Reports to: Elementary School Principal
Job Goal
To create supportive and inclusive learning environment for students with diverse learning needs
To develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) to address students' unique challenges and provide them with the necessary support to succeed academically, socially, emotionally, and behaviorally
Performance Responsibilities:
Individualized Education Plans (IEPs):
Collaborate with parents, general education teachers, and other specialists to assess students' needs and develop personalized IEPs.
Implement IEP goals and objectives to address students' academic, social, emotional and behavioral goals.
Regularly review and update IEPs based on students' progress and evolving needs.
Instruction and Differentiation:
Adapt and modify curriculum materials to meet the individual needs of students with disabilities.
Provide specialized instruction in small groups or one-on-one settings to ensure optimal learning experiences.
Utilize a variety of teaching strategies and resources to accommodate diverse learning styles.
Classroom Management:
Establish a positive and inclusive classroom culture that promotes a sense of belonging for all students.
Implement behavior management strategies and interventions to address challenging behaviors and promote a positive learning environment.
Collaboration:
Work collaboratively with general education teachers, support staff, and administrators to foster a team approach to student success.
Participate in team meetings, parent conferences, and professional development opportunities to enhance collaboration and communication.
Assessment and Progress Monitoring:
Conduct ongoing assessments to measure students' progress and adjust instructional strategies accordingly.
Keep accurate and up-to-date records of students' academic and behavioral performance.
Parent and Community Engagement:
Communicate regularly with parents to provide updates on students' progress, discuss strategies for support at home, and address any concerns.
Collaborate with community resources and organizations to enhance support for students with special needs.
Professional Development:
Stay informed about current trends, research, and best practices in special education.
Engage in ongoing professional development to enhance knowledge and skills related to working with students with diverse learning needs.
