Job Description:
POSITION: High School Special Education Teacher
Qualifications Required:
Holds or is eligible for the Connecticut State Certification as a High School Special Education Teacher
Knowledge of various disabilities and effective strategies to address them
Strong interpersonal skills and communication skills
Patience, flexibility, and a genuine commitment to the success of students with special needs
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate
Reports to: High School Principal
Job Goal
To provide tailored instruction and support to students with diverse learning needs
To collaborate with students, parents, and other educators to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment that fosters academic and personal growth
Performance Responsibilities:
Individualized Education Plan (IEP) Development:
Collaborate with the special education team, parents, and other professionals to assess students' needs and develop personalized IEPs.
Implement and monitor IEP goals and objectives, making necessary adjustments based on student progress.
Differentiated Instruction:
Adapt and modify the general education curriculum to meet the individual needs of students with various learning disabilities.
Implement diverse instructional strategies to address different learning styles and abilities.
Inclusive Classroom Environment:
Foster an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere in the classroom that values diversity and encourages active participation from all students.
Collaborate with general education teachers to facilitate the including students with special needs in general education classes.
Assessment and Progress Monitoring:
Conduct ongoing assessments to gauge students' academic and social progress.
Regularly communicate with parents and stakeholders regarding students' achievements, challenges, and overall development.
Behavioral Support:
Develop and implement behavior intervention plans as needed.
Provide positive behavioral support and guidance to help students develop appropriate social skills.
Collaboration:
Work collaboratively with other special education staff, general education teachers, counselors, and support personnel to ensure a cohesive and comprehensive support system.
Attend and actively participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, team meetings, and professional development opportunities.
Assistive Technology:
Incorporate technology and assistive technology tools to facilitate learning for students with special needs.
Stay informed about advancements in assistive technology and integrate them into the instructional environment.
Parental Involvement:
Establish and maintain open lines of communication with parents, providing regular updates on students' progress and addressing concerns.
Encourage parental involvement in the education process.
