Classroom Teacher / Special Education

Job Description:

POSITION: High School Special Education Teacher

Qualifications Required:

• Holds or is eligible for the Connecticut State Certification as a High School Special Education Teacher

• Knowledge of various disabilities and effective strategies to address them

• Strong interpersonal skills and communication skills

• Patience, flexibility, and a genuine commitment to the success of students with special needs

• Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate

Reports to: High School Principal

Job Goal

• To provide tailored instruction and support to students with diverse learning needs

• To collaborate with students, parents, and other educators to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment that fosters academic and personal growth

Performance Responsibilities:

• Individualized Education Plan (IEP) Development:

• Collaborate with the special education team, parents, and other professionals to assess students' needs and develop personalized IEPs.

• Implement and monitor IEP goals and objectives, making necessary adjustments based on student progress.

• Differentiated Instruction:

• Adapt and modify the general education curriculum to meet the individual needs of students with various learning disabilities.

• Implement diverse instructional strategies to address different learning styles and abilities.

• Inclusive Classroom Environment:

• Foster an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere in the classroom that values diversity and encourages active participation from all students.

• Collaborate with general education teachers to facilitate the including students with special needs in general education classes.

• Assessment and Progress Monitoring:

• Conduct ongoing assessments to gauge students' academic and social progress.

• Regularly communicate with parents and stakeholders regarding students' achievements, challenges, and overall development.

• Behavioral Support:

• Develop and implement behavior intervention plans as needed.

• Provide positive behavioral support and guidance to help students develop appropriate social skills.

• Collaboration:

• Work collaboratively with other special education staff, general education teachers, counselors, and support personnel to ensure a cohesive and comprehensive support system.

• Attend and actively participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, team meetings, and professional development opportunities.

• Assistive Technology:

• Incorporate technology and assistive technology tools to facilitate learning for students with special needs.

• Stay informed about advancements in assistive technology and integrate them into the instructional environment.

• Parental Involvement:

• Establish and maintain open lines of communication with parents, providing regular updates on students' progress and addressing concerns.

• Encourage parental involvement in the education process.

Terms of Employment:

• As established by the contract Salary between the Weston Board of Education and the Weston Teachers Association.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board of Education's policy.
