POSITION: ABA Special Education Teacher, Grades PK-1

AVAILABLE: 2024-2025 School Year

SALARY: Per CEA-Portland bargaining agreement

Position Overview: A special education teacher to serve as primary interventionist in the education and treatment of children with Autism, Behavioral Challenges and related disorders.

Qualifications: Connecticut Certification - Special Education (165)

Experience with students manifesting behavioral challenges and skill deficits.

Experience working with children with Autism utilizing ABA preferred.

Special Education Elementary ABA Teacher Job Description: Portland Public Schools is seeking a special education teacher with ABA experience for Valley View School. This position includes case management of students requiring specialized ABA supports within a small therapeutic learning environment. The program goal is to provide students with the skill instruction they need to be successful. A strong background in design and implementation of ABA curriculum is essential to this role.

Responsibilities:

  • Instructing students using applied behavior analysis utilizing various evidence-based methods including but not limited to discrete trial training.

  • Designing and delivering instruction to students with social and emotional needs.

  • Consulting with related service staff, BCBA, and regular education teachers to design and deliver appropriate instruction/offer opportunities in the least restrictive environment as appropriate.

  • Planning and implementing programs in a range of areas including: peer integration, social interaction, communication, academics, self-help skills, gross-motor skills, language, functional living skills, behaviors management and recreation/leisure skills.

  • Creating systems for data collection and maintaining individual student program books

  • Facilitating PPT meetings and team meetings.

  • Evaluating and determining eligibility for students with special education needs.

  • On-going communication with families.

  • Providing parents with resources and support they need to help their child at home.

  • Creating goals and objectives to meet the needs of students and serving as a case manager for students.

  • Planning and supervising assignments for paraprofessional staff assigned to the classroom or to specific students under the teacher's scope of direct or indirect supervision.

  • Coaching and modeling strategies for the paraprofessionals.

  • Completing Educational Assessments, VBMAPPS, collaborative FBAs, etc.

  • Act as liaison for a caseload of students, to ensure full implementation of student IEPs, monitor student progress, support student programming, and alert the Evaluation Team Leader of any need to convene a Team meeting

  • Participation in the development of Individualized Education Programs, Progress Reports and other formalized documentation requirements

  • Meeting regularly with the Program BCBA, principal and behavioral supports team regarding issues and concerns around student needs.

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities consistent with this role/position as assigned by the Director of Student Services or Principal.
