Job Description:

Greenwich Public Schools seeks a long-term substitute social studies teacher from approximately September 12, 2024, through approximately December 11, 2024; the position carries full salary and benefits for the duration of the assignment.

Position Purpose

To provide an instructional program that will help students prepare for college, career and civic life. Social studies teachers will utilize the C3 Framework to help students build the critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaborative skills needed for their postsecondary futures and to be active, responsible members of society. The social studies program will specifically help students to:

  • Develop questions and engage in inquiry.

  • Apply disciplinary concepts and tools.

  • Evaluate sources and use evidence.

  • Communicate conclusions and take informed action.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Implements GPS social studies curriculum consistent with GPS goals, mission, and vision, as well as CT State Social Studies Frameworks.

  • Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small-group instruction, and student learning.

  • Creates an atmosphere in which students feel free to express their views.

  • Incorporates technology and digital tools appropriately into instruction.

  • Teaches knowledge of social studies, incorporating history, geography, economics, political science, systems of government, education, responsible citizenship, and humanities.

  • Fosters an awareness of the complexity and interrelationship of local, state, national, and world problems and approaches to their solutions.

  • Develops students' interpersonal skills, and ability to contribute to the thoughtful exchange of ideas in group discussions.

  • Incorporates inquiry-based learning opportunities into instruction.

  • Promotes students' critical analysis concerning the key issues of their world.

  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student needs.

  • Provides appropriate, meaningful, and timely feedback to improve student achievement.

  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops, or professional meetings, or by conducting research.

  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement, and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.

  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.

  • Ensures that student conduct conforms to the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.

  • Reviews and implements modifications, accommodations, and intervention plans for all students, both general and special education.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.

  • Knowledge of the GPS social studies curriculum, the C3 Frameworks, the CT State Social Studies Frameworks, and the CT Common Core State Standards.

  • Ability to create compelling questions that propel student inquiry and curiosity.

  • Ability to help students develop a capacity for gathering, evaluating and using sources responsibly.

  • Ability to utilize a learning management system to interact and engage students.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.

  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work, and collaborate with instructional teams.

  • Ability to provide students with opportunities to develop critical thinking skills, while affording opportunity for creative activity.

  • Ability to employ a variety of teaching techniques through the use of appropriate instructional materials to meet the needs of all learners.

  • Ability to provide students the opportunity to be critical thinkers of online content.

Qualifications Profile

  • CT State Certification, or certifiability, in History & Social Studies, Grades 7-12 (#026) required
