HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE TEACHER (Biology) - 2024-2025 School Year

Qualifications Required:

  • Holds or is eligible for the Connecticut State Certification as a high school Biology teacher (030)

  • Additional general science (034) or physics (032) certification preferred

  • Strong knowledge related to the NGSS content standards, CT safety regulations, and inquiry-based teaching

  • Possess a degree from an accredited college or university

Job Goal:

As a High School Biology Teacher, your primary responsibility is to cultivate a dynamic and engaging learning environment where students can explore the wonders of life science. You will inspire and educate students about biological concepts, processes, and principles, fostering their curiosity and understanding of the natural world. Utilizing student-centered instructional methods, you will empower learners to actively participate in their educational journey, encouraging critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Curriculum: Develop and implement a comprehensive biology curriculum aligned with state standards and educational best practices. Design instructional materials, lesson plans, and assessments that cater to diverse learning styles and abilities.

  • Classroom Instruction: Deliver engaging and interactive biology lessons that stimulate students' interest and enthusiasm for the subject.

  • Student Assessment: Assess student learning through formative and summative assessments, providing timely feedback to guide progress.

  • Individualized Support: Provide personalized support and guidance to students who require additional assistance or enrichment opportunities. Offer help sessions, extra resources, and academic support to help students achieve their academic goals.

  • Lab Activities: Conduct hands-on laboratory experiments and investigations to reinforce theoretical concepts and develop students' scientific inquiry skills. Supervise lab activities, ensuring safety protocols are followed and equipment is used responsibly.

  • Technology Integration: Integrate technology tools and resources into instruction to enhance learning outcomes and student engagement. Utilize educational software, interactive simulations, online resources, and multimedia presentations to supplement classroom teaching.

  • Collaboration: Collaborate with colleagues, administrators, and parents to support student learning and development. Participate in departmental meetings, professional development workshops, and parent-teacher conferences to exchange ideas, share best practices, and address student needs.

  • Communication: Communicate effectively with all stakeholders including parents/guardians, teaching colleagues, school counseling and other support staff to serve the best interests of students.

Ideal Student-Centered Instructional Activities:

  • Problem-Based Learning: Engage students in authentic, real-world projects that require them to apply biological concepts to solve problems or explore topics of interest.

  • Socratic Seminars: Facilitate Socratic seminars where students engage in open-ended discussions and critical inquiry about biological concepts, theories, and ethical dilemmas.

  • Phenomena-Based Learning: Present students with authentic biological problems or case studies that require them to analyze data, conduct research, and propose solutions.

  • Multimodal Presentations: Encourage students to create multimodal presentations (e.g., videos, infographics, podcasts) to demonstrate their understanding of biological concepts and communicate scientific information effectively.

Expectations of Professionalism:

  • Adhering to ethical and professional standards in education.

  • Participating in school and district meeting

  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation

  • Maintain professional competence through a variety of activities including inservice education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities

  • Plan and organize science-related field trips or guest speaker presentations to enrich student learning experiences

  • Ensure safety protocols are followed during lab sessions
