Job Description:
Greenwich Public Schools is seeking an outstanding literacy specialist for Julian Curtiss Elementary School effective July 1, 2024.
Position Purpose
1.To support students, teachers, and administrators by providing guidance, leadership, expertise, and instruction to improve literacy achievement for all students in all content areas (reading, writing, math, social studies, science).
2.To effectively assess and diagnose student literacy needs and design and deliver literacy instruction.
Essential Responsibilities
Implements GPS literacy curriculum consistent with school district goals, mission, and vision, along with the Connecticut State Standards for Language Arts.
Serves as a member of the School Data Team, Student Assistance Team and attends parent meetings to discuss student progress and growth.
Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
Develops standards for critical analysis through group discussions on a variety of reading materials.
Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student needs, including those of students with special needs; conducts individual small-group instruction as needed.
Receives and screens referrals from teachers, instructional data teams, and administrators.
Uses diagnostic information to design individualized programs for each student and interprets results to classroom teachers.
Provides intensive instruction to struggling readers to enable students to develop and strengthen literacy skills.
Provides appropriate, meaningful, and timely feedback to improve student achievement.
Provides collaborative services to classroom teachers, models best instructional practices, and team-teaches as appropriate to support individuals or groups of students in learning effective strategies.
Acts as a resource teacher in literacy to general education classroom teachers by assisting them in organizing their reading program, selecting materials, suggesting teaching techniques, and relating their instructional program to the special needs of students.
Creates an atmosphere in which students feel free to express their views.
Employs a variety of teaching techniques through the use of instructional materials and individual aids.
Screens and diagnoses students' reading skills and provides a literacy program for selected students based on their individual needs in order to support classroom teachers.
Reviews and implements modifications, accommodations, and intervention plans for all students, both general education and special education.
Qualifications Profile
CT State Certification, or certifiability, in Remedial Reading and Remedial Language Arts (#102) or Reading and Language Arts Consultant (#097) required
Outstanding ability as an elementary literacy educator required
