POSITION SUMMARY
The Math Coach is an instructional leader who has a deep understanding of the elementary math curriculum as well as pedagogy. The coach will be able to apply their knowledge of adult learning and learning environments for children in order to build the capacity of teachers to support the math needs of students. The Math Coach must possess evidence of being a leader in developing a strong math community and be well-versed in current research and instructional practice in this area. The coach must be a skilled observer of the connection between a teacher's math instruction and a student's understanding of math content and practice in order to develop plans to improve understanding. In addition, the coach must be skilled in modeling and co-teaching math lessons, and collaborate with teachers and students.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Instruction
Work closely with our K-8 Math Coordinator to bring consistency and fidelity to Tier 1 instruction
Knowledge of Common Core Standards and Math Practice Standards and how they are implemented in the NCPS curriculum and instruction
Support teachers in unpacking our Understanding by Design Units of Study.
Deep understanding of Domains 2 (Planning) and 3 (Responsive Teaching in the Differentiated Classroom) in the Effective Teaching Framework that is part of the Teacher Evaluation and Professional Growth Plan (TEPL)
Support the development of high quality/effective math instruction in all schools; observe and coach developing math teachers to improve instructional planning, teaching practice, and the use of data, assessment, and instructional technology
Support staff in understanding strategies and skills that enhance math instruction
Lead and support classroom teachers in differentiating math instruction
Support teachers in understanding the "why" behind teaching strategies and skills that support math instruction
Support teachers in writing DIRs (Differentiated Instructional Record) and developing progress monitoring plans
Analyzes and interprets comprehensive data to design targeted instruction and intervention for teachers and students.
Use all sources of assessment data to monitor student progress and the impact of teacher's instructional strategies
Plan coaching cycles in response to student data trends and/or building and district needs
Ongoing collaboration with building administrators, math specialists, and math coordinator
Program Evaluation
Regularly assess the implementation of our NCPS Math Curriculum, resource materials, and technology and recommend changes and improvements as appropriate.
Collaborate with math specialists to review and revise our Understanding by Design Units of Study.
Review and analyze school and classroom math data with building administrators, K-8 Math Coordinator, math specialists, and classroom teachers to inform instruction.
Participate in USTs, LSTs, and SSTs as needed.
Collaborate with teachers and math specialists in the development of appropriate Tier One interventions
Professional Development
Support the development of classroom teachers' understanding of the progression of standards to support their Tier 1 planning and instruction
Provide professional learning for teachers in math instruction
Self-reflect on their development as a coach and their knowledge of math and seek out additional PL opportunities.
