General Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent of Schools, the Director of Math/Science
Curriculum, and building administration, the responsibilities of this position are solely working
with students. The math teacher is responsible, but not limited to, providing high quality lessons
that meet the needs and modalities of all learners, assessing student progress on
district/state-wide assessments to meet common core state standards, consistently
communicating with families, and effectively managing student behavior.
Essential Performance Responsibilities
Demonstrates and differentiates methods required to perform classroom and/or subject
specific assignments for the purpose of providing an effective program that addresses
individual student requirements Instructs students for the purpose of improving their success in academics through a defined course of study
Manages student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment. Monitors students in a variety of educational environments (e.g. classroom, school grounds, hallways, restrooms, field trips, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment
Prepares a variety of written materials (e.g. grades, lesson plans following scope and sequence, correspondence with parents and students, examinations and quizzes,
attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose of documenting student progress and meeting mandated requirements
Assesses student progress towards objectives, expectations, and/or goals for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents and administration
Collaborates with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents and a variety of community resources for the purpose of improving the overall quality of student outcomes, achieving established classroom objectives in support of the school improvement plan
Administers and develops subject specific assessments for the purpose of assessing student competency levels and/or developing individual learning plans Directs assistant teachers, student teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers and/or student workers for the purpose of providing an effective classroom program and addressing the needs of individual students
Attend professional development opportunities that promote improved instructional strategies and support researched-based resource material needed to implement the
intervention program successfully and support/maintain professional growth
Follow district guidelines and policies
Maintain proper professional conduct as defined in the Connecticut Code of Professional
Responsibilities for Teachers
Keep in confidence all personal, student, or personnel records and information
Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of Ansonia Public Schools curriculum and techniques for integrating curriculum,
Ansonia Public Schools policies and effective instructional practices; thorough understanding of
the teaching and learning process; ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple
perspectives and multicultural education; ability to infuse technology into curriculum; ability to
work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office, school based staff, students,
parents and community; ability to use diagnostic data to tailor instruction to meet the needs of
the student(s); excellent organizational, communication, and human relations skills.
Education and Experience
Required certification: 029 Mathematics, 7-12 OR 229 Mathematics Middle School, 4-8
Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency in current numeracy theory and effective mathematical/teaching practices
A thorough knowledge of best practices and standards, including the district's curricula and the Common Core State Standards, and numeracy programming such as IXL,Freckle, and/or Math 180
Demonstrated strengths in interpersonal skills, time management, organizational abilities
and communication skills, both orally and written
Demonstrated ability to use technology as communication and teaching tools
