The Wethersfield Public Schools is seeking a dedicated educator to develop students' skills and competence in Family and Consumer Sciences. Courses focus on the teaching of Culinary Arts, Food Services and Sewing. In this role, the teacher will stimulate the independence of each student as a learner, effectively assess student needs and progress, and plan instruction to achieve desired objectives. The teacher will accomplish these objectives through effective communication with students, parents and colleagues, and through the use of engaging techniques and materials in a positive climate.

Start Date: August 19, 2024 (start of 2024-2025 school year)

Compensation: $54,394 - $107,777

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Create engaging student-centered lesson plans and deliver curriculum focused on nutrition and wellness, culinary arts, sewing and similar topics;

• Maintain structures to support and model high standards of food/kitchen and sewing safety;

• Facilitate hands-on food preparation activities and cooking and sewing labs;

• Create, organize and utilize learning activities designed to enhance classroom teaching, support optimal learning, and develop and refine effective life skills;

• Assist students in investigating their own questions and furthering their personal learning plan;

• Encourage student learning through peer collaboration and productive talk;

• Guide students, individually and in groups, in preparing for different types of examinations;

• Collaborate with colleagues in the development and utilization of unit lessons and learning assessments;

• Participate on teams to develop curriculum aimed at improving student learning and performance;

• Provide individualized student mentoring and strong classroom behavior management;

• Provide on-going feedback to students through the use of formative assessments.

Qualifications:

• Position requires the appropriate CT Certification in Home Economics, Pre-K to Grade 12 (045);

• Prefer candidates with ServSafe Certification;

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community;

• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form;

• Ability to meet deadlines with severe time constraints;

• Ability to handle and treat information confidentially;

• Ability to plan and organize work schedule and set priorities;

• Ability to work independently and with a sense of urgency.
