Start Date: July 1, 2024

Certification Requirements:

  • CT Teaching Certificate: 013 (K-6) or 305 (1-6)

  • Other applicable CT Elementary Certifications

  • Other relevant CT k-12 Teaching Certification

  • Emergency Generalist (201)

Broad Function:

The Elementary STEM Coach leads the planning, development and execution of the school's integrated STEM program. The STEM Coach assists classroom teachers and other instructional staff in developing strategies, skills, tools, techniques, and the capacity to effectively teach science, technology, engineering and math to all grade K-5 students.

The STEM Coach is responsible for collaborating with teachers in promoting and implementing interdisciplinary STEM activities into the core curriculum through a problem-based enrichment opportunities for students and engaging the community in STEM-themed events to promote family and community voice and participation in the school community.

The STEM Coach, reporting directly to the principal, has the following specific responsibilities. In addition, he/she is expected to undertake any other reasonable task assigned by the principal.

Duties and Responsibilities

Professional Development and Instructional Coaching

  • Assess the skill level and work products (e.g., plans, assessments) of teachers in areas related to STEM instructional approach priorities: cooperative learning, real-world applications, authentic assessments, technology integration, along with project-based and problem-based learning.

  • Work with school leadership, EIST, and Instructional Leadership Team to design a comprehensive professional development and support plan based on teacher needs.

  • Plan, design, and lead differentiated PD sessions aligned to STEM instructional properties.

  • Collaboratively provide high-quality coaching to teachers using strategies that align to their development needs.

  • Coordinate external professional development opportunities for teachers, including MPS-required PD, as well as other self-arranged partnerships, as needed.

  • Participate in ongoing STEM Professional Learning Community, focusing on sharing practices, analyzing data, targeting interventions, and creating a culture of collaboration across the STEM Initiative School.

Curriculum Support and Development

  • Collaborate with teachers, EIST, and teacher teams in curriculum development to plan problem based units, performance assessments, opportunities for authentic technology integration, and meaningful cross-curricular connections.

  • Coordinate the development and execution of grade-level design challenges or transdisciplinary units and performance tasks.

  • Participate in grade-level meetings to coordinate grade-level curricular projects and provide targeted support towards STEM instructional approaches.

  • Facilitate involvement of external partners in classrooms across the curriculum (i.e. authentic experiences, audiences, and assessments).

  • Support all teachers in understanding and infusing STEM-related experiences, NGSS and CCSS practices, and the Engineering Design Cycle in meaningful and appropriate ways.

Enrichment and Community Engagement

  • Provide and support engaging, STEM related enrichment to increase interest, experience, and develop STEM habits of mind (e.g. robotics, science club, etc.).

  • Promote STEM awareness and engagement through targeted partnerships and activities (STEM Exploration Family Nights, CT Invention Convention, Future Cities Competition) that enhance academic achievement across the curriculum.

Salary and Benefits: Per MFT (Teacher's Union) Contract
