About the Department Services:

The Education Services Division provides educational programs for expelled students, troubled youth placed in a county-operated juvenile institution, and students on probation who want an alternative to the traditional high school campus. The Juvenile Probation Department is solely responsible for all programs of the Excel Academy Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program (JJAEP), Excel Academy Charter School, and the Opportunity Center.

About the Position:

The Classroom Assistant assists in the implementation of the daily program under the direction of the classroom teacher. When needed fill in for the a classroom teacher at various campuses to provide students in the HCJPD education programs with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Enables students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Educates individual students (one-on-one or small group) under the direction of the classroom teacher or in the absence of the classroom teacher implement lesson with all students as outlined.

  • Monitors supplementary work and independent study.

  • Confers and plans with classroom teachers.

  • Manages children.

Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • Meet the Highly Qualified Requirements for Paraprofessionals as outlined by the No Child Left Behind Act.

  • 60+ College hours from an accredited college or university.

  • One (1) Year of experience working with troubled youth.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.

  • Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process.

  • Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.

  • Basic knowledge of subjects assigned.

  • Ability to assist classroom teacher with instruction of students and manage their behavior.

Additional Requirements:

  • Upon receiving a conditional job offer, every applicant undergoes a criminal background check and drug screening.

  • Employees who hold this position are required to possess and maintain a valid Texas Driver's license. Employee must maintain liability insurance in at least the minimum amounts required by law.

  • Certified copies of transcripts of educational credentials and/or college credits will be required during hiring process.

  • All applicants are required to present evidence of a tuberculosis (TB) skin test. In the event of a positive test, the applicant will be required to provide additional documentation.

  • Every employee is subject to random testing for drug and alcohol or if there is a reasonable suspicion to believe that the employee is under the influence of a substance prohibited by this policy while in the course and scope of employment.

  • If public emergency is declared by county, staff could be assigned to other duties and/or facilities and/or under the supervision of another county department.

  • Must be at least 21 years old.

  • This position involves working with challenging youth where use of crisis intervention and de-escalation strategies may be necessary to ensure the safety of both youth and staff.

Salary:

  • $37,794.33 - 46,209.95 Annually
