VIEW JOBS 12/12/2018 12:00:00 AM 2019-03-12T00:00 Culpeper District is seeking a Bridge Repair Worker for the Structure and Bridge work group covering mainly Culpeper county but may have the opportunity to work in Culpeper Districts other surrounding counties performing preventative and restorative structural maintenance activities to large culverts and bridge structures. This position works as part of a crew to repair and maintain bridges and other structures. Perform manual labor to include formation of footers, abutments and wing walls, place and finish concrete, erect steel beam bridges and install timber and concrete bridge decks. Position requires ability to operate a 3-ton dump truck, rubber tire front-end loader, backhoes, truck mounted crane, forklift and various types of hand/power tools. Applicant should have demonstrated experience in preventative maintenance and minor repairs on equipment/tools; and the ability to perform physically demanding labor over, in, and around water from boats and scaffolding at various heights and in harsh weather conditions; use of safety shoes is required. Ability to read plans and sketches. Skill in completing assigned roadway/bridge maintenance activities, to include bridge and culverts. Knowledge and skill in forming placement and finishing various types of concrete and use of wood/steel forms. Skill in carpentry tools to perform carpentry, concrete work with the use of a jackhammer, hand tools, power saws/drills and air wrenches. Knowledge in providing proper lane closures as outlined in the Virginia Work Area Protection Manual and utilizing all traffic control devices. Knowledge of safety policies/procedures and programs. Ability to communicate effectively and interact successfully with co-workers, managers and internal/external customers, and to follow written/oral directions. Ability to perform heavy manual labor to include standing, bending, and frequent lifting, working in and around water from boats and scaffolding at various heights and in harsh weather conditions. Ability to obtain flagger and work zone certifications. Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (minimum Class B with Air Brake endorsement) within 6 months of employment. A valid driver's license and safety shoes are required at time of hire. Preferred Qualifications High school graduate or equivalent, experience in the maintenance and/or construction of roadways, bridges, facilities or comparable large-scale construction projects, first aid/CPR certification, fire extinguisher training, chain saw safety, and flagger certification. Current possession of Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or CDL learner's is strongly preferred. Special Requirements Safety shoes are required for the performance of job duties. Fingerprint background check, references, work history, and DMV records will be verified prior to employment. Pre-employment physical with drug screen will be required. Applicants selected for an interview will be required to perform a skills demonstration as part of the interview process. This position is designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with the job are required during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response, and emergency operations. Performance of these duties may require work outside of normal business hours including nights, weekends and holidays. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required to report.
