Duties

The primary function of this position is to evaluate and process health care claims that are being corrected or reconsidered for payment. The position is responsible for requesting and/or obtaining the information required for reprocessing health care claims

Major duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Evaluates and processes health care claims that are being corrected or reconsidered for payment.

  • Responsible for the review and processing of claims received under the CHAMPVA Program, a health care benefits program for family members of veterans who are Permanently and Totally (P&T) disabled because of a VA adjudicated service-connected disability.

  • Reviews guidelines and regulations to determine the specific provisions that are applicable to each healthcare claim submission.

  • Responsible for resolving all discrepant data or aberrant claims situations generated by the claims processed by the center annually.

  • Requests and/or obtains information required for reprocessing health care claims.

Work Schedule: Between 6:00 am - 4:30 pm, Monday-Friday

Telework: VA supports the use of telework as a way to help attract and retain talented individuals in public service, increase worker productivity, and better prepare the agency to operate during emergencies. This position may be authorized for telework. Telework eligibility will be discussed during the interview process.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/01/2024.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-08 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-07. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

You may qualify based on your experience as described below:

  • Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-07 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. To be minimally qualified for this position at the GS-08 level, you must meet 3 of the 5 experiences listed below. Specialized experience is:
  1. Reviews, evaluates, and verifies all claims related to beneficiaries to make necessary corrections to claim transactions.

  2. Examines a variety of routine and complex healthcare claims for payment of medical and ancillary care for eligible CHAMPVA Family Member program in a worldwide VA claims benefits program.

  3. Inspects claims for duplicate detection, missing or discrepant data, and proper medical documentation.

  4. Reviews and researches medical claims to determine all appropriate data is available to process or to resolve issues associated with the request for payment.

  5. Verifies data points to include the beneficiary, vendor, diagnosis codes, billed amounts, and the input of the patient's responsibility after any other health insurance has made payment.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: Work is performed in a fast paced and sometimes stressful professional office environment. Long periods of sitting in one location are required in completing transactions, using computer equipment. Work involves movement throughout the Claims Adjudication and Reimbursement Directorate and occasional trips to other Departments. Intense concentration is necessary in reviewing and researching claims submitted for payment along with work produced by CHAMPVA Claims Examiners.
