The Personal Injury Protection (PIP) Claims Director provides business leadership and strong technical skills for the Claims organization. This position will oversee Personal Injury Exposures for the Direct Channel.

The PIP Claims Director ensures effective and efficient execution of initiatives across all business units and validates results through quality reviews and reporting. The PIP Claims Director should be able to work both independently and partner with all levels of the organization. The PIP Claims Director should possess the ability to communicate and present innovative thoughts and modifications to the current operation.

This position reports to the Vice President of Claims.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Maintains ownership for severity, service and expense management on the Personal Injury Protection (PIP) line of business.

  • Enforces Company guidelines and procedures. Has a working knowledge of New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York regulatory claim handling guidelines and statutory regulations. Knowledge of regulatory requirements in other states is a plus.

  • Oversight over multi-disciplined units to include PIP Litigation, PIP Subrogation and Pre-Certification

  • Manage reserve adequacy and litigation through quality review programs, audits and conferences with claim supervisors and staff. This includes oversight on large loss reserve exposures.

  • Responsible for Business Process and metrics for the Personal Injury Operation (budget coordination and business scorecard results).

  • Implement change amongst the business units to improve and increase productivity levels within the operation. Must possess strong teamwork skills to work with other Personal Injury Protection Directors to achieve common goals.

  • Possess metrics and reporting knowledge with the ability to implement and analyze reports on a weekly, monthly and quarterly basis.

  • Ability to examine complex data and reports in order to analyze severity and expense results and provide recommendations for improvement. The Claims Director must possess the ability to communicate areas of deficiencies and make recommendations for improvement.

  • The ability to provide innovative and creative ideas to improve our overall claims operation and improve our customer service initiatives with our agents and policy holders.

  • Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.

  • The ability to communicate Company goals and objectives to staff in a forthright and positive manner and promote our culture of calling attention to problems.

  • Accountable for expense management, monitor and track current spend rate; implements process improvements and controls to reduce expenses.

  • The ability to investigate, properly interpret and apply policy coverage so as to correctly assess Personal Injury Protection claims.

  • Collaborative mind-set and willingness to work with people outside immediate reporting hierarchy to improve processes and generate optimal departmental efficiency.

  • Possess a strong working knowledge of Excel including the development of charts and visual data for analytics. Ability to build reports, pivot tables, and utilize Tableau is a plus.

  • Handle project work in addition to normal responsibilities of a Personal Injury Protection Claims Director.

  • The ability to prepare and present written and oral reports to senior and executive management setting forth all issues which may influence coverage determination and reserve recommendations.

  • The candidate must have excellent written/verbal communication and organizational skills.

Qualifications and Education

  • A bachelor's degree (B.A.) from an accredited four year college or university or having successfully been tenured in a claim management position.

  • Minimum of fifteen years of prior claims technical/management experience. Strong Personal Injury Protection and/or bodily injury background including litigation, state regulatory compliance, injury assessment and fair claims handling practices.

  • Insurance designations (AIC, AEI, or CPCU) a plus.
