Summary

The Central Employee Services Division within King County's Department of Human Resources (DHR) seeks customer-focused professionals for two Claims Assistant positions. We are a self-insured employer looking for motivated and eager individuals to work in our Workers' Compensation Claims unit. This recruitment will be used to fill two career service vacancies and to create an eligibility pool to fill additional career service vacancies that may occur within the next six months.

Reporting to the Claims Supervisor, the Claims Assistants will bring authentic empathy to their work in the Worker's Compensation Claims unit. In accordance with Washington State industrial insurance legal requirements and claims management standards of King County, a self-insured entity in Washington State, the County is responsible for self-administering its own Workers' Compensation program.

Job Duties

Applying equity and social justice principles(ESJ) is a daily responsibility and a foundational expectation for all King County employees. This role will champion King County's deep commitment to ESJ by exemplifying shared values, behaviors, and practices in all aspects of the work.

  • Open case files for incoming claims to ensure appropriate forms have been received and technical and legal requirements are met.
  • Enter incident and claims data filed by King County employees and index incoming claim-related mail into the iComp claims management system.
  • Perform phone coverage for central phone line; respond to billing inquiries and help injured employees understand their benefits and the status of their claims.
  • Review, process, and adjust medical invoices.
  • Create and update credentials for claim vendors in Excel.
  • Generate and update forms utilizing Word and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
  • Deliver excellent customer service to King County employees by managing and responding to employee inquiries via email and phone.
  • Maintain and ensure confidentiality of sensitive claims information in all forms; written, verbal, and electronic.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of increasingly responsible administrative support responsibilities in claims management, employee benefits, or human resources OR an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the specific skills, knowledge, and ability to perform the work.

  • Experience in a high-volume call working environment that is fast paced with time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, to include the ability to work independently and as part of a team; ability to provide excellent customer service with discretion, patience, and professionalism.
  • Demonstrate shared values and behaviors as related to equity and social justice principles and practices.
  • Manage multiple and shifting priorities to meet deadlines, while working under pressure and considering broad impacts to meet customer service expectations and regulatory deadlines.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to communicate with diverse individuals at all levels, both internally and externally.
  • Intermediate level proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and OneNote), Adobe Acrobat, and demonstrated ability to quickly learn new technology tools.
  • Ability to enter and review alphanumeric and numeric data entries with accuracy and high attention to detail.
  • Experience and ability to prepare, format, proofread, and edit documents including Adobe forms.
  • Experience and demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, to include sensitivity to and knowledge of various ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience using iComp or similar claims management systems.
  • Experience working with public sector employees.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to move and lift up to 25 lbs.

Other Position Information

These positions are non-exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and therefore overtime eligible. Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule, every other Thursday, comprising a 40-hour workweek, normally 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. These positions are represented by Local 117: International Brotherhood of Teamsters - Professional & Technical and Administrative Employees and are classified as Claims Assistant (class code 2330100).

Teleworking Requirement

The successful candidates will be expected to work onsite 5 days per week until they have passed their initial probationary period. Once approved by their manager, the Claims Assistants may work a hybrid schedule with at least three days a week onsite. King County employees must reside in Washington State and within a reasonable distance to worksites to respond to workplace reporting requirements.

Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a home workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.
