HelpDuties Summary

The Claims Assistant works as a member of one of the Teams in the Veterans Service Center (Intake Processing Center, Pre-Determination, Rating, Post-Determination, Appeals, or Public Contact.) The Claims Assistant serves as a primary contact for the Veteran and his/her representative or advocate for compensation and pension claims. The Claims Assistant is able to explain benefit programs and entitlement criteria.

Major Duties:

  • Demonstrate the knowledge required for utilizing various computer systems to prepare correspondence, analyze claims and determine if end product controls are needed

  • Develops, gathers, and reviews evidence received in conjunction with claims and updates VBMS/MAPD to show receipt of such evidence.

  • Utilizes the centralized mail portal to review mail and routes all mail and any files to the appropriate location.

  • Processes powers of attorney.

  • Responsible for the care and maintenance of claims folders and insures all pertinent records and documents are filed chronologically.

  • Processes admission notices and requests for evidence from various computer systems and provides accurate and complete replies.

  • Schedules request for hearings by contacting service organizations and the veterans and greet visitors.

  • Determine basic eligibility for benefits, processes dependency questionnaires, processes Notices of Disagreements, performs weekly WIPP reviews, inputs exam request, and performs other administrative duties when needed.

  • Analyzes claims and determines if dispositions of claims and control actions have been appropriately identified.

  • Establishes or updates control actions, to include VBMS, MAP-D, SHARE and COVERS

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/24/2018.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials.

You may qualify based on your experience as described below:

  • Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience include: experience in the preparation of claims for benefits, procurement of relevant evidence, the ability to control electronically and maintain pertinent files and documents in the claims process, work in which the applicant showed evidence of a working knowledge of the claims processing, and prepared the individual to successfully deal with clients from many backgrounds.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements:
The work is primarily sedentary, although some slight physical effort may be required.
