Claims Adjuster - Auto Estimator

As an auto damage claims adjuster, you'll serve as Progressive's point of contact with customers - directing and making decisions regarding the repair process from beginning to end. Managing your own inventory while working independently, you'll work closely with body shops and others to negotiate repair pricing and assess liability. Ideal candidates will possess leadership and conflict management skills, along with strong attention to detail and a passion for providing excellent customer service.

This is a field position with access to a company car and frequent driving within your assigned geographical area of Philadelphia, PA. We assess our workload collectively, which means you may cover assignments outside your geographical area. You may also be required to report into an office occasionally.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Complete vehicle inspections, write estimates, determine total loss evaluations, and set clear expectations and timelines

  • Negotiate repair process with body shops

  • Document information related to the claim and make decisions consistent with claims standards and local laws

  • Evaluate and handle claim payments and resolution of claims without payments

  • Review and determine validity of any supplement requests

Must-have qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher and at least one year of automotive, appraisal/estimatics, or insurance experience

  • Instead of a degree, a combined total of five years post-secondary education or work experience at least one of which is in automotive, appraisal/estimatics, or insurance

  • Valid driver's license, auto insurance, and compliance with Progressive's driving standards and/or policies


  • Commensurate with experience, salary range is $66,000.00-$73,200.00/year

  • Gainshare bonus up to 16% of your eligible earnings based on company performance

Job Responsibilities: * Investigates coverage, liability and cause of loss physical damage claims to include total loss, minor bodily injury claims, property damage liability claims, 1st party Medical Exposures (MedPay and PIP). This includes but not limited to policy review, medical report review, interviewing all parties associated with the loss and gathering and analyzing all necessary investigative documentation. * Provides accurate assessments and negotiates fair and efficient claims resolutions while managing costs. Settles losses according to the documented damage, the language of the policy of insurance, pertinent regulatory and statutory considerations and within granted authority. * Prepares written communication, including but not limited to settlement letters, disclaimers of coverage and reservation of rights letters * Maintains effective claim file documentation and diary system. Monitor diary to achieve timely development of file and timely disposition of the claim * Recognizes and pursues recovery opportunities and prepares submissions to SIU when indicated * Assigns and supervises vendor resources, including but not limited to independent adjusters, engineers and other experts as needed * Bachelors degree preferred * Strong customer relations skills. * 5 years in the handling of auto material damage claims. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: * Knowledge of personal lines auto policy and business auto policy with the ability to make coverage decisions. * Strong knowledge of comparative negligence and liability. * Familiarity with estimating software a plus * Ability to take responsibility and work independently in a home based environment. * Strong communication and analytical skills are required. * Ability to negotiate skillfully in difficult situations. evaluations and presenting them effectively. * Ability to formulate sound expense, indemnity, and business judgment while supporting loss.
