Civil Rights Specialist 13

This position serves as a staff specialist responsible for directing the civil rights external outreach program for the department in the upper peninsula of Michigan. This position is responsible for developing and maintaining collaborative relationships between the Michigan Department of Civil Rights and statewide and national organizations that have complimentary missions to the Michigan Department of Civil Rights.

This position will also function as the Tribal liaison with responsibility for developing and encouraging partnerships with the Michigan tribal community, including organizations and businesses; and forming coalitions with other advocacy groups around common issues. This position will be responsible for outreach to Michigan's recognized tribes providing referral services, preparing resource materials and will serve as liaison and internal consultant with regards to the full range of MDCR programs, policies, procedures and services.  The position will work in coordination with various MDCR work areas to administer a balanced process for addressing civil rights issues within the tribal community.

 The incumbent will foster an improved climate of race relations and understanding of civil rights law in the state of Michigan. The incumbent will also form collaborative relationships with corporate, government, law enforcement and civic leaders to foster an improved climate of race relations and understanding of civil rights laws in the state of Michigan. The candidate must have the ability to multi-task and be able to develop and maintain an extensive network.

Position Description

This position generally requires possession of a bachelor's degree in any major and four years of professional experience.
