Civil Engineering Intern

Position Purpose/Summary

A Civil Engineering Summer Inter will be responsible for assisting the current engineering department staff in a myriad of tasks not limited to office support services, engineering design support services, field inspection services, construction support services and associated documentation requirements of design and construction project occurring within the department. Work is performed in accordance with the principles and practices of civil engineering, and regulations and ordinances of the City of Springfield under the supervision of the City Engineer or his appointed designee.

Essential Functions

• Assist with computer aided design to draft engineered plans or review private development submittals.

• Assist with compiling accurate construction documents and estimates to build engineering designs.

• Assist with oversight to in-house engineering construction, state construction or hired contractors.

• Assist with maintaining accurate files of City infrastructure.

• Assist with surveying and related data collection or layout.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of civil engineering theories and principles.

• Ability to research and resolve problems.

• Ability to maintain records and develop summary reports.

• Knowledge of CAD drawings.

• Ability to examine and/or review plans and design specifications for engineering purposes.

Education and Experience

• Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university 2 or 4 year civil engineering program

• Must have completed one full year of academic courses at the time of application

• Proof of educational status will be required.
