Overview

VNS Federal Services is currently seeking a full-time Civil Engineer to work in our Richland, Washington office.

Responsibilities

Basic Function:

The Civil Engineer's primary focus is civil structural, but can also perform civil site/facility and construction management tasks, such as, grading, water and sewer lines, and temporary roads. The Engineer will be providing design engineering and construction management support for (1) building decontamination and demolition (D&D), (2) large equipment stands builds, (3) electronic packaging builds, (4) temporary building erection (i.e. mobile trailers) and hazardous waste transport (49CFR 393). The Civil Engineer will take a project from the design stage to the final construction and is responsible for performing quality calculations, writing reports, test plans and specifications.

Principal Accountabilities:

The main focus for the Civil Engineer is civil structural, but can also perform civil site/facility and construction management tasks. Specific responsibilities include:

Develops and applies broad knowledge of principles and practices in the civil engineering area;

  • Evaluates, selects, and applies standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to perform a task or sequence of tasks for conventional projects with few complex features;

  • Collaboratively uses judgment to determine adaptations in methods for non-routine aspects or assignments;

  • Works on multiple projects of moderate size or portions of major projects;

  • Uphold the Select Core Values: Integrity, Honesty, Teamwork, and Quality

  • Preparing and writing reports, test plans, and specifications;

  • Produce and maintain standards/best practice documents and related process documentation;

  • Perform quality calculations

Qualifications

Education, training, experience:

  • A bachelor's degree is required

  • Well-developed skills in Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, Power Point, Access and Outlook

  • Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills to work in a team environment and dialogue between engineering disciplines to resolve problems

  • A minimum of 5-15 years professional experience as a Civil Engineer

  • Knowledge of CAD and FEA is desired, but not a requirement

  • Knowledge of industry codes

  • Knowledge of Mathcad

Applicants will be expected to identify requirements of and create specifications for infrastructure projects; industrial power equipment; read and interpret schematics, specifications for civil engineering projects, and technical reports. Responsibilities * Review and check drawings to ensure that designs meet the technical needs of customers and adhere to industry standards for compliance, reliability and safety. * Interface with potential vendors to verify qualifications and references. * Supervise equipment manufacturing, installation, commissioning, and start-up and identify and monitor project milestones. * Apply civil engineering principals to projects to troubleshoot and solve problems. * Perform engineering studies and alternative analyses. * Review and/or develop functional requirements and design criteria documents. * Evaluate pre-conceptual and conceptual designs/concept sketches. * Evaluate or provide input to procurement specifications and statements of work for detailed engineering designs for civil projects. * Provide input to project schedule development for engineering deliverables. * Oversee design subcontractors. * Conduct design reviews. * Engineering support during construction including field walk downs, issue resolution, and design changes. * Interface with internal and external customers and end-users. * Evaluate as-built drawings and support project close-out. * Assist with the development of test procedures and conduct or oversee qualification testing Qualifications * Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering from an accredited college or university. * Demonstrated ability to perform at the professional level with at least 5 or more years of civil/structural related design experience. * Recent experience with civil/structural projects. * Good knowledge of civil engineering codes and standards, principles and practices, and design evaluation techniques. * Good communication and presentation skills to properly communicate information to peers, customers, vendors, and management. * Excellent analytical, organizational, planning and problem-solving/troubleshooting skills. * Ability to multi-task on several projects in parallel in a fast-paced environment. * Strong commitment to providing superior customer service. * Proficient in Microsoft Office applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point; Computer-aided design/drafting proficiency a plus but not required. * Strong work ethic. * Previous Hanford experience desirable. * Experience working under nuclear quality requirements a plus. * Structural analysis experience is desirable Certifications/Licenses: * Professional Engineer (PE) or Structural Engineer (SE) License or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) is a plus but not required NV5 offers a complete and competitive benefit package.
