GENERAL SUMMARY:

CIVIL ENGINEER II

Under direction, is responsible for performing professional engineering tasks associated with multiple engineering functions. Ensures conformance to design specifications and safety standards. Provides technical advice to appropriate personnel regarding design, construction or program modifications or structural repairs. Manages and directs the construction, operations and maintenance activities of project site.

CIVIL ENGINEER III

Under direction, is responsible for performing professional engineering tasks associated with multiple engineering functions. Inspects project sites to monitor progress, ensure conformance to design specification and safety standards. Provides technical advice to appropriate personnel regarding design, construction or program modifications or structural repairs. Manages and directs the construction, operations and maintenance activities of project site.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Inspects project sites to monitor progress, ensure conformance to design specification and safety standards.

Provides technical advice to appropriate personnel regarding design, construction or program modifications or structural repairs.

Manages and directs the construction, operations and maintenance activities of project site.

Supervises survey and inspection crews to ensure proper quality assurance, quality control of materials and methods in compliance with drawings and specifications.

Participates in meetings with other governmental agencies, utility representatives, local offices and interested residents to work out details of schedule, inspections, utility conflicts and other potential problems.

Prepares and maintains periodic pay estimates and required documentation for work performed.

Maintains liaison with other Department of Roads divisions regarding interpretation, implementation and possible changes to a project.

Performs related duties as assigned.

CIVIL ENGINEER III (only)

Assigns and supervises the work of subordinates to ensure proper quality assurance, quality control of materials and methods in compliance with drawings and specifications.

Provides problem solving and report preparation to various Department of Roads stakeholders.

ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR BRIDGE ENGINEER:

CONSTRUCTION

Performs various contract administration duties, including but not limited to:

  • Reviews and approves Inspector's Daily Reports (IDRs) of on-site contractor activities

  • Reviews and approves contractor submitted shop drawings

Makes periodic site visits to ensure conformance to design specifications and safety standards Coordinates with MCDR survey, inspectors, and management as well as utility companies, governmental agencies, and the general public regarding construction projects.

Addresses engineering related construction issues.

Familiar with State website, forms, and procedures for Construction. Strong knowledge of:

  • MDOT Standard Specifications for Construction and Material Source Guide

  • MDOT Construction Manual

  • MDOT Standard Plans

  • Field Manager software

QUALIFICATIONS:

CIVIL ENGINEER II (Pay Grade 10, $68,348.95 - $88,403.65)

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or a directly related field from an accredited college or university

  • Three (3) years of engineering experience

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master's Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited college or university

  • Five (5) years of engineering experience

Required Licenses or Certifications:

  • Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license and an operable insured automobile for authorized travel

Preferred Licenses or Certifications

  • Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Michigan certification

CIVIL ENGINEER lll (Pay Grade 12, $82,702.22 - $106,968.42)

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or a directly related field from an accredited college or university

  • Five (5) years of experience performing various engineering duties, not limited to: construction plan interpretation, inspection report accuracy, inventory control of tested stock and supplies, maintaining record-keeping system, and computation of engineering data

  • Supervisory or project management experience

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master's Degree in Civil Engineering or a directly related field from an accredited college or university

  • Seven (7) or more years of experience performing various engineering duties, not limited to: construction plan interpretation, inspection report accuracy, inventory control of tested stock and supplies, maintaining record-keeping system, and computation of engineering data

Required Licenses or Certifications:

  • Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Michigan certification

  • Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license and an operable insured automobile for authorized travel

Preferred Licenses or Certifications

  • Possess and maintain a valid Michigan Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

COMPETENCIES FOR SUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCE OF JOB DUTIES:

  • Construction methods and materials used within these projects

  • Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and current Michigan Department of Transportation traffic standards

  • Microstation, Synchro, and Microsoft Word and Excel software

  • Interpersonal skills necessary to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships

  • Performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature

  • Performing basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, and ratios
