The Civil engineer will work on an integrated design team within our Environmental Services Global Practice to perform the following duties:

  • Complete grading and drainage designs using 3D design tools.

  • Perform hydrologic/hydraulic calculations using TR55, HY-8, Culvertmaster, HEC programs, PondPack, HydroCAD, etc.

  • Performing other engineering calculations.

  • Use Autodesk Civil 3D, perform 2D drafting and 3D modeling tasks, detailed construction drawings, civil site plans using applicable standards and specifications, sketches, detailed drawings, and design information according to project standards and procedures.

  • Write engineering specifications.

  • Conduct field construction oversight.

  • Perform shop drawing review.

  • Assist lead engineers with various and miscellaneous project duties;

  • Execute a variety of assignments using prescribed methods and standard techniques including drawing sequence and presentation, sizing various system components and refining rough sketches.

  • Produce and execute rough sketches and redlines or mark-ups on ongoing projects.

  • Complete and review design drawings within scope, budget and schedule.

  • Incorporate schedules, budgets and project criteria into civil design and layouts.

  • Organize and maintain all revisions of project drawings, plot files and project-related information in a logical and well-structured manner.

  • All other duties as assigned.

  • B. S. or M.S. in Civil Engineering from an accredited program; P.E. license preferred.

  • Minimum 2 to 5 years applicable civil engineering and consulting experience.

  • Strong experience working with both private and public-sector clients.

  • Proficient with Autodesk Civil 3D.

  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Knowledge in design, calculations and design systems.

  • Experience with field inspections and shop drawing reviews is a plus.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with others (Project Managers, Engineers, Designers and Detailers) in a multi-discipline project team environment to resolve design or drawing issues as appropriate and to accomplish objectives.

  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.

The PDP is designed to introduce candidates to the technical, administrative, and program management aspects of highway engineering in the agency. During this developmental program, the employee will be expected to complete three major components including apprentice experience, developmental assignments, and a professional development academy. The apprentice experience will occur in both the FHWA's Federal-Aid Division Offices and Federal Lands Highway (FLH) Division Offices where the candidate receives on-the-job training through a structured set of learning experiences described in the participant's developmental plan. Several developmental assignment options may include the following: design, construction, project development, environment, safety, pavements, materials, research, ITS, bridge, traffic operations, hydraulics, preventive maintenance, access management, utilities and R/W, planning, surveys, geotechnical, value engineering, etc. The ideal candidate has completed a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering within the last two years (veterans have up to six years) of the closing date of the announcement or are current graduate degree students, who are anticipating graduation in Fall 2019.
