VIEW JOBS 9/29/2022 12:00:00 AM 2022-12-28T00:00 <p>Summary</p><p>DOWL's civil engineering group works on number of varied projects across the state of Alaska and manages some regional contracts that stretch into the lower 48. The designer who fills this position will work on various public and private projects that span storm water compliance and repair projects, water and sewer services and mains, and multi-acre site design.</p><p>DOWL is seeking an enthusiastic Civil Designer to join our Civil Engineering group. The civil engineering group provides a wide range of services including water and wastewater distribution mains and services, stormwater conveyance and detention design, site design, grading, permitting, and support through construction. We often work alongside other engineering disciplines and architects.</p><p>The Civil Designer is responsible for performing engineering tasks related to civil design and analysis under the supervision of a licensed Civil Engineer. The person in this position is expected to exercise strong critical thinking skills and be able to quickly learn and apply highly technical concepts and engineering skills. The successful person is expected to work well with others, absorb and apply constructive criticism and seek guidance from more experienced members of the team as necessary. A person working in this position may also be required to assist others and should show a willingness to learn skills and perform a variety of tasks not directly related to the field of civil engineering, including, but not limited to: construction support assignments, aviation, transportation and other engineering tasks.</p><p>Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:</p><ul><li><p>Perform civil engineering related calculations, analysis, and design tasks under the supervision of a licensed engineer.</p></li><li><p>Coordinate AutoCAD drafting requirements for civil engineering design projects.</p></li><li><p>Coordinate with government agencies, client staff, and other professionals to obtain design information and approvals.</p></li><li><p>Prepare and route project related correspondence and record keeping.</p></li><li><p>Calculate quantities and assemble an engineer's estimate</p></li><li><p>Learn and apply company standards and best practices.</p></li><li><p>Work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams.</p></li><li><p>Work efficiently to meet deadlines and perform tasks within a given amount of time.</p></li><li><p>Develop rudimentary understanding of project budgets and schedules.</p></li><li><p>Develop familiarity with a variety of design codes related to the industry.</p></li><li><p>Consistently exercises discretion and judgment in all work tasks.</p></li><li><p>Provide professional written and verbal communication with project partners and clients.</p></li><li><p>Conduct all activities consistent with health and safety in mind.</p></li><li><p>Other duties as assigned.</p></li></ul><p>Qualifications</p><p>To be successful in this position, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.</p><p>Education and/or Experience</p><p>This position requires a Bachelor's degree from an ABET accredited civil engineering or related program, with no previous experience required.</p><p>Certificates, Licenses, Registrations</p><ul><li><p>Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam.</p></li><li><p>Certification as an Engineer Intern or Engineer in Training or the ability to receive certification within 6 months of hire.</p></li><li><p>Must have a valid driver's license and a good driving record.</p></li></ul><p>Mathematical Skills</p><p>Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical analysis, and fundamentals of geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.</p><p>Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities</p><ul><li><p>Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical journals. Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from clients, co-workers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to effectively present information to clients, co-workers, and the public. He/she must also have excellent writing skills and be able to communicate effectively with large and diverse groups.</p></li><li><p>Understanding of civil engineering fundamentals including: physics, statics, strength of materials, structural analysis, steel and concrete design.</p></li><li><p>Ability to accurately complete engineering calculations.</p></li><li><p>Exceptional technical and communication skills.</p></li><li><p>Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.</p></li><li><p>Must be able to use Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and Project software.</p></li><li><p>Ability to prioritize special projects and daily workload to ensure that all work is completed in a timely and efficient manner.</p></li><li><p>Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical analysis, and fundamentals of geometry and trigonometry.
