The City of Wauwatosa is partnering with the International City/County Management Association to offer an internship experience that not only demonstrates the nuts and bolts understanding of what city managers do, but how they do it - the core values that guide their management practices and inform their decisions. If you are a current high school student and interested in exploring a career in local government, learning about city government and various city departments, or gaining leadership and community skills, this internship is for you.
Learn about the work a city performs daily by shadowing various directors and leaders in the city of Wauwatosa, attending public meetings, conducting research, and completing projects with the Deputy City Administrator. Primary areas of work will include city administration, communications, tourism, and public art. The intern will have the opportunity to contribute to projects in other service areas based on availability and interest. This summer internship is designed for an individual enrolled in high school or graduating from high school in 2024. The intern will work up to 15 hours a week for approximately 10 weeks.
Essential Functions
Hands-on work based learning in government administration, business communication, policy, research, tourism, and community relations
Execution of assigned tasks and completion of one larger, final project
One of the major projects will be creating a call for art for art benches to be placed at the new Wauwatosa park
Job shadowing of various Wauwatosa employees/leaders
Learns about the role of city administration including values, management practices, and informed decision making
Build and maintain positive relationships with peers, city employees, and the public aligned with the city's values of adaptability, equity, inclusion, innovation, resilience, respect, service excellence, and transparency
Direct mentoring from the Deputy City Administrator
Participation in tours, meetings, and trainings
Observes experienced workers to acquire knowledge of methods, procedures, and standards required for performance of duties
Other duties and projects as assigned
Minimum Requirements
Current high school student or 2024 high school graduate within commuting distance of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin
Must be able to work 9 - 10 weeks between June and August 2024
Availability to work 10 - 15 hours per week
Interest in government, public administration, public service, community relations
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers and other city staff
Ability to use Microsoft Office programs and social media platforms
