The Engineering Division is located within the Community Development Department. The Division provides civil engineering services for the City, assists Community Development by providing engineering reviews and civil inspections for all commercial, multi- family and residential developments, administers municipal capital improvement projects, and maintains all traffic control systems within the city limits. Under limited supervision by the Director of Planning and Community Development, the City Engineer will plan, organize, direct, and review the activities of the organization's Engineering Division.

The City Engineer is the City's highest-level engineering authority and is responsible for policy implementation, the coordination of all engineering functions, overall project preparation, and the development and control of project schedules. Gulf Shores seeks a skilled and solutions-oriented leader ready to tackle the organization's engineering needs.

Candidates should have strong civil engineering experience, including site plan review, stormwater drainage, transportation design and roadway construction. Knowledge of municipal engineering and techniques concerning the design, construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance of public infrastructure, as well as an understanding of procurement procedures, budgetary principles, and applicable state, federal, and local ordinances, laws, rules, and regulations, is critical.

This role requires a bachelor's degree in civil engineering and at least 5 five years of relevant experience. Candidates should be prepared to obtain their license as an Alabama Professional Engineer within six months of hire if they do not already have one.

Certification as a Floodplain Manager and FEMA training with debris management are preferred, as is local government experience. The selected candidate will also be required to maintain a valid Alabama driver's license throughout their tenure. Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job's essential functions will be considered. Please note that although residency is not required, it is preferred.
