SALARY: $48,096 to $57,715 Annually
GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION
Under the direction and supervision of the Prosecuting Attorney and City Attorney, this position performs paralegal duties with respect misdemeanor cases and record-keeping for the Prosecuting Attorney. Working at a high level the paralegal is familiar with or able to find applicable city, state and federal statutes, agency rules, court rules, and other sources of authority and procedure.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Consistently demonstrates analytical ability, administrative skills, ingenuity, and independent judgment in their area.
Assists attorney(s) in drafting complex pleadings and discovery.
Functions as the liaison between the attorney, courts, clients, and others including witnesses.
Serves as a key component at trial.
Gathers information by asking questions or determining sources for information to assist the public, law enforcement, attorney(s) accurately.
Conducts legal research.
Schedules and tracks deadlines to move cases forward and meet procedural requirements.
Provides case management of all discovery documents for disbursement.
Enters pertinent data into designated computer systems/software programs, reviews, and verifies data.
Processes subpoenas for law enforcement and witnesses.
Identifies appropriate laws, judicial decisions, legal articles, and other relevant materials to assigned cases.
Verifies accuracy of cited cases.
Prepares deposition summaries from transcripts.
SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Basic legal terminology, forms, and documents used in paralegal work.
Legal procedures and practices involved in composing, processing, and filing a variety of legal documents.
Standard legal references and their contents.
English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Business letter writing.
Perform responsible paralegal work involving the use of independent judgment and personal initiative.
Independently prepare routine legal documents, correspondence, and memoranda.
Work cooperatively with other departments, City officials, and outside agencies.
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Ability to work independently and to exercise reasonable judgement in decision making.
Maintain confidentiality of work.
Ability to research information and analyze data to arrive at valid conclusions, recommendations, and plans of action.
Create, compile, organize, and maintain a variety of records and records management systems.
Manage multiple tasks and projects, meeting deadlines in a timely manner.
Proficiently operate office equipment, including computers and applicable software applications, at a skill level necessary to achieve timely and accurate data/word production output.
Maintain confidentiality.
Respond to requests and inquiries from the public and co-workers in a courteous and professional manner.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB
Required:
Education: An associate degree in Paralegal/Legal Studies or two years or more of years of work experience as a Legal Assistant or Paralegal in a law office, or comparable work environment.
Preferred:
At least ten (10) years' work experience working as a legal assistant.
Preference will be given to applicants with a prior paralegal/legal assistant background around criminal law.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, and writing. The employee is also required to maintain physical condition necessary for operating assigned equipment, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending or sitting for prolonged periods of time and lifting to 30 pounds. Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions demonstrating intellectual capabilities.
Working Environment:
This is an office setting; however, lifting of heavy file boxes and walking to and from the courtrooms is required.
