City Attorney

The City of Battle Creek, Michigan (52,721), known as the "Cereal Capital of the World," with "something for everyone," is seeking a strategic leader to become the next City Attorney. Located in northwest Calhoun County at the intersection of the Kalamazoo and Battle Creek Rivers, it is the main city of the Michigan Metropolitan Statistical Area, which encompasses all of Calhoun County. Battle Creek is best known as the home of the Kellogg Company, the founding city of Post-Consumer Brands, and the Fort Custer Industrial Park, a globally known industrial park with manufacturing companies from multiple countries, including Japan and Germany.

The City is seeking a highly collaborative and passionate leader to serve as its next City Attorney. The City Attorney position is a visible member of the City's senior administrative team and requires extensive municipal law experience, collaboration, and management skills that are based on legal standing and in accordance with the City's Charter and code of ordinances.

Battle Creek has a City Commission-City Manager form of government, with the City Attorney being one of two appointed positions at the City. The City Manager administers the day-to-day operations of the City, along with the senior administrative team.

The City Commission is made up of five ward Commissioners and four Commissioners At-Large. The Mayor is directly elected, and the Vice-Mayor is selected by the Commissioners. Each serves a two-year, non-staggered term. As part of the senior leadership team, the City Attorney provides counsel and legal advice to the City Commission, City Manager, City Department Directors, and City Staff.

The City Attorney provides professional direction and guides all legal matters of the City. The City Attorney acts as legal advisor, attorney and counsel for the City's municipal corporation and all its officers and department heads, including the City Commission and City Manager, as well as City employees, in matters relating to their official duties.

The City Attorney serves as Director of the Legal Department. This position is appointed by the City Commission and serves at the will of the Commission.
