Role Statement for Circulation Assistant I:
The City of Nampa's Library Department is looking for a motivated employee to perform a variety of circulation services for public library patrons.

The principal function of an employee in this class is to perform a variety of circulation services for public library patrons. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of an assigned supervisor, but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with the assigned supervisor, other city and library employees, and the public.

ROLE SUCCESS PROFILE
Key Job Accountabilities:

  • Performs sorting and shelving of material in accordance with the Dewey Decimal System.

  • Performs routine opening and closing procedures including, but not limited to, straightening up shelves, picking up loose material, emptying out "drop off" shelves, and returning loose material to Circulation work room.

  • Maintains neat and clean shelves by shifting material and reading shelves to find errors.

  • Searches shelves for missing, lost, and overdue material.

  • Performs check-in and check-out of library materials to patrons, using an integrated library system (ILS) and an automated material handler (AMH).

  • Handles patron's material reservations by pulling the request from the shelves, processing them, and sending them to other libraries (if applicable) or shelving them for patrons to pick up.

  • Registers patrons for library services and enters data into an ILS. Registering patrons involves very detailed steps, including verifying patron residency status, verifying addresses through city web map and county assessor's website, and inputting patron information according to a consortium wide standard.

  • Provides information and directions for patrons; Troubleshoots issues with the self-checkout machines and consortium app.

  • Monitors material for damage and routes them to appropriate staff for repair or replacement.

  • Uses ILS to regularly take inventory of library collection, maintaining an adequate record of material.

  • Handles financial transactions, including collecting fines, lost and damaged item charges, and other fees.

  • Explains and follows library's rules, circulation policies and procedures to patrons and resolves patrons' complaints regarding library policies and procedures with diplomacy and tact.

  • May provide needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions as necessary.

  • Fields telephone questions from the public and directs calls to the correct destination as needed. Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions as requires; reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas.

Education, Experience Level, Certification Requirements:

  • High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED).

  • One (1) year of experience in a library or related field providing customer service, interpreting policies, and resolving conflicts.

Knowledge:

  • Working knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System.

  • Working knowledge of customer service techniques.

  • Working knowledge of standard library procedures.

  • Working knowledge of standard library procedures.

  • Proficient knowledge of basic computer operations in an office or retail setting.

  • Proficient knowledge of point of sales transactions and proper cash handling.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to operate, or quickly learn to operate, library equipment employed in all phases or functions of assigned duties.

  • Ability to sort and shelve material alphabetically and according to the Dewey Decimal System.

  • Ability to work independently and provide assistance to patrons, in person and by phone.

  • Ability to exercise tact, patience, courtesy, and diplomacy when resolving problems with patrons.

  • Ability to maneuver and manipulate objects among high and low shelves.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language.

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions.

  • Ability to organize and prioritize work and perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines.

  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn and use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology.
