FUNCTION:

The Middle School Choir Director works under the direct supervision of the principal of the school to which the choir director is assigned. With the approval of the principal and under the guidance of the School Services Consultant for choral music, the Middle School Choir Director is responsible for determining and implementing the campus choral music program and related activities.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & REQUIREMENTS:

Teacher Duties

  • Plans for successful student learning of daily objectives that include basic knowledge and skills, and central concepts of the discipline.

  • Ensures students are engaged and successful in learning, critical thinking and problem solving.

  • Utilizes multiple models of instruction, assessment and effective teaching practices.

  • Utilizes State TEKS and District Curriculum to design engaging lessons which are challenging, high quality and appropriate for the level of instruction.

  • Maintains current accurate records of daily attendance and textbooks issued.

  • Able to effectively manage time and materials.

  • Accepts related assignments as requested by principals.

  • Instructs classes in the subject area(s) assigned.

  • Is responsible for the use and care of available instructional materials.

  • Maintains current records of student grades and progress.

  • Accurately evaluates and assesses performance of students in subject/s taught.

  • Confers regularly with parents on student progress.

  • Fulfills related responsibilities, e.g., reporting grades, exams, field trips, and programs.

  • Maintains classroom discipline that allows for student learning, safety and teaches individual responsibility.

  • Analyzes data and information from assessments and utilizes it for individualizing instruction.

  • Identifies students that are at-risk of failing the subject or grade.

  • Appropriately plans for remediation and intervention for students identified as at-risk.

  • Appropriately modifies and accommodates student's needs based on IEP goals and 504 accommodations.

  • Works cooperatively with the campus librarian in the selection of materials appropriate to the subject area.

  • Encourages reluctant and struggling learners.

  • Provides positive/constructive feedback and reinforces student learning.

  • Is positive and courteous to students, parents, fellow educators and the community.

  • Maintains and cares for all equipment and furniture.

  • Meets deadlines as requested.

  • Uses effective leadership techniques.

  • Follows campus, district, and state policies and procedures.

  • Demonstrates self-direction in professional growth.

  • Responsible for the academic success of students assigned.

  • Responsible for determining and participating in professional development goals and activities that are aligned with the needs of the students, prior performance appraisal, as well as, the goals of the campus and district.

Choir Director Duties:

  • Handles audition and placement of students in choir program, and communicates audition results to all parties concerned.

  • Makes arrangements for repair, maintenance, and inventory of school-owned uniforms and equipment assigned to choir.

  • Maintains care, upkeep, and cataloging of choral music library.

  • Coordinates team-teaching with high school choir director in order to encourage a sequential program of music education.

  • Teaches sightreading, music theory, and performance skills as provided in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for choral music. Cultivates a learning environment in which students develop appreciation of their own performances and performances of others.

  • Prepares and distributes student handbook on choir policies, regulations, and procedures that are congruent with District policies, regulations, and procedures. Formulation of handbook must be approved by principal prior to issuance to students. Obtains choir student and parent signatures indicating acknowledgment and acceptance of choir policies, regulations, and procedures as outlined in handbook. Communicates, through handbook, all aspects of middle school choir program.

  • Attends all meetings called by school services consultant for choral music area.

  • In order to accomplish designated duties, spends approximately one to two hours of extra time before or after school in daily preparation or with student rehearsals as needed. Approximately seven (7) Saturdays are required to cover TMEA auditions and performances, middle school clinics and performances, solo and ensemble contests, and region meetings. Supplementary pay has been included in Middle School Choir Director's salary as compensation for extra time spent in daily preparation; time spent in auditions, rehearsals, and performances outside school day; and time spent in attendance at District music meetings.

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the campus principal.

SEASONAL DUTIES

August

  • Attends the Texas Choral Directors Association Convention, if possible.

  • Attends Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Region fall meeting.

  • Plans and outlines activities for the school year.

  • Schedules choir concerts and activities on the middle school's master calendar.

  • Prepares a calendar of choir activities to distribute to students, parents, and school administration.

  • Selects music and instructional materials for use during school year, and requisitions materials as necessary.

  • Develops teaching charts and other teaching materials.

  • Auditions choir students to determine voice placement.

  • Begins sightreading practice.

  • Meets with other District choir directors to discuss and plan District Secondary Choir Holiday Concert.

  • Organizes uniforms and equipment, and arranges for cleaning and repair of items.

September/October

  • Requests permission and funding to attend TMEA Convention in February of items.

  • Issues choir uniforms to students.

  • Prepares students for middle school Region choir auditions.

  • Participates in middle school Region choir auditions. (See note).

  • Participates in high school District choir auditions. (See note.)

  • Meets with high school choir director to plan fall or spring feeder choir concert.

  • Begins preparation of fall feeder choir concert music, if applicable.

November/December

  • Begins preparation of music for holiday concerts.

  • Participates in high school Region choir auditions. (See note.)

  • Prepares students for middle school Region choir clinic and concert, if applicable.

  • Presents a middle school choir performance at the high school fall feeder choir concert, if applicable.

  • Plans and presents holiday performances for community organizations, banks, malls, etc.

  • Participates in middle school Region choir clinic and concert. (See note.)

  • Participates in District's Secondary Choir Holiday Concert.

  • Plans and orders music for District's Secondary Choir Concert Showcase and UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest.

  • Presents a campus holiday choir concert.

  • Selects and assigns music to students for District's Middle School Solo and Ensemble Contest.

January

  • Assists students in solo and ensemble music preparation.

  • Makes recordings of solo accompaniments for student practice as needed.

  • Selects music for District's Secondary Choir Concert Showcase and UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest.

  • Begins choir student recruitment for next school year.

  • Meets with high school choir director to plan a spring feeder school choir concert. (Optional if a feeder school choir concert was performed in the fall.)

February

  • Participates in District's Middle School Solo and Ensemble Contest. (See note.)

  • Prepares choir for UIL Choir Concert and Sightreading Contests.

  • Plans for an elementary feeder school choir concert.

  • Begins preparation for a campus spring choir program.

  • Attends TMEA Convention, if possible.

March

  • Participates in District's Secondary Choir Concert Showcase. (Participation is optional if choir performs at middle school choir contest.)

  • Presents an elementary feeder school choir concert.

  • Continues preparation for spring concert.

  • Plans and prepares solo instruction after school for end-of-school program, musical, or talent show as needed.

April/May

  • Participates in UIL Choir Concert and Sightreading Contests.

  • Presents a campus spring choir concert.

  • Presents end-of-school program, musical, or talent show as applicable.

  • Completes inventory of music, uniforms and equipment, and provides inventory reports to school services consultant for choral music area.

NOTE: Participation in all UIL, TMEA, and District-sponsored choir contests and events is expected. Participation is defined as (a) entering students for competition in event, as applicable; and (b) assisting in the supervision, administration, or adjudication as assigned by contest or event chairperson. Other contests are entered on a voluntary basis depending on desire and ability of group.

Working Conditions:

  • Ability to perform duties while standing and/or walking for extended periods, up to eight (8) hours a day.
