About the Opportunity:

We have a rewarding and exciting opportunity at our Portland Metro campus for a Children's Garden Coordinator. This position is responsible for developing, maintaining, and improving the Children's Garden and the garden-related activities for the children in treatment at the Parry Center Campus, in addition to enhancing and maintaining the physical environment of the agency's grounds as needed.

About You:

Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas:

  • Develop and implement therapeutic horticultural activities for children utilizing the organic vegetable, herb, and flower garden, as well as indoor activities sites. Develop garden-related educational syllabi and organize thematic events such as seasonal celebrations, etc.

  • Develop, enhance, and maintain all physical aspects of the garden site and its infrastructure, including caring for all plantings both perennial and annual to promote the optimum health, appearance, and safety of the Children's Garden by pruning and trimming of shrubs, tilling, weeding, composting, mulching, planting. Plan and implement annual garden design.

  • Participate in weekly clinical meetings on Wednesday mornings, to coordinate with clinical staff in providing activities in response to children's individual treatment plans. Participate in weekly Facilities Department Meetings.

  • Maintain lines of communication between the garden program, the Development Department, Volunteer Program, and the Clinical Treatment Programs as well as a variety of private and public sponsors of the garden. Assist in developing and maintaining media contacts, public relations, tours, and grant requests etc., under the direction of the Development Department.

  • In collaboration with the Volunteer Department, coordinate, set up & manage the annual August fundraiser Farmer's Market

  • Attend and participate in occasional local seminars and workshops dealing with Horticultural Therapy

  • Complete all training required for the position.

Our preferred candidate will have the have the following education, knowledge, and experience:

Must Have:

  • Associate degree or higher in Landscape, Managment/Horticulture Therapy or equivalent training/education

  • Experience in working in horticultural such as school garden, retail nursey, organic farming, etc. with knowledge of year-round needs of a large garden

  • Driver's license in good standing and personal vehicle and proof liability insurance with limits of $100,000/$300,000

Preferred but not required:

  • Experience working directly with children and adolescents

  • Knowledge of mental and behavioral health challenges and how to modify activities to accommodate those needs

  • Ability to collaborate with other professionals and develop horticulture activities for children and adolescents

This is full time 40/hour per week on site position. Salary commensurate with education and experience.
