JOB OVERVIEW: The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of clerical and secretarial duties to support legal and investigative functions of the Child Support Division; and prepare an organized file for all referrals upon receipt and ensures all accurate and necessary information is received. This position acts under the supervision of unit attorney.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintains accurate records in MACSS for auditing purposes regarding compliance to time frames set out under State mandated guidelines for the Child Support Department. Responsible for assessing and opening cases, maintaining and closing cases both physically and in the computer. Enters and updates data into four different computer systems. Maintains organized case files, gathers data, and updates case diaries and file for each activity attempted or completed.

  • Monitors payment records and updates records as needed. Calculates child support arrearages and resolves differences for payments not recorded with DCSE. Works with defense counsel, Missouri Department of Child Support Enforcement, probation and parole, courts and commissioners to ensure child support is paid and to answer inquiries.

  • Prepares a variety of legal documents from template or rough draft, such as; motions, petitions, information's, interrogatories, memoranda, complaints, discovery, jury instructions, sworn affidavits, subpoenas, correspondence, contempt orders, UIFSA documents, paternity orders, warrants of commitment, reports, certified court documents, business record affidavits, and notarizes probable cause statements.

  • Schedules depositions and maintains trial dockets, daily calendars and court calendars.

  • Assists with trial docket. Assures all documentation is in file and organized to proceed with case. Files documents with court or determines FIPS to use in cooperation with responding states. Notifies court clerk if attorney delayed. Researches legal records, runs record checks, makes calls and gathers last minute data. On occasion, appears in court to testify as to arrears or employment verification, and support the victim.

  • Contacts clients, schedules appointments and assists clients with completing affidavits and questionnaires. Explains process, limitations, and consequences. Follows up with non-compliant clients.

  • Contacts witnesses and victims regarding court proceedings. Advises of court dates, advises victim when testimony is needed for court, answers inquiries when attorney is in court. Inform victims of right to make an impact statement.

  • Assists investigator with research to track down fugitives, non-custodial parents and their employers using telephone, internet and Westlaw. Teletypes law enforcement officials to pick up fugitives. Prepares and files extradition paperwork.

  • Monitors probationary compliance and initiates appropriate action for non-compliant defendants.

  • Serves as a Notary of the Public and provides necessary services.

  • Appears in court to support victims when necessary.

  • Accepts and processes non-cash payments brought to court by defendants for forwarding to Family Support Payment Center and ensures that all case identifying information is on payment for proper disbursement.

  • Answers telephone and email, responds to inquiries from attorneys, law enforcement officials, commissioners, state agencies, and clients.

  • Makes copies, mails and faxes documents.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education / Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent with additional clerical or secretarial training (preferably some legal secretary or paralegal training).

  • A minimum of one to two years legal secretarial experience or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities will be considered.

  • REJIS, MULES, IRS Safeguard Testing, ACCURINT, SECURE CASENET required.

  • Employment is contingent on successfully passing a full criminal background check.
