Job Summary: The Child Life Assistant aides in planning, implementing, and evaluating patient activity and interaction in a healing, child-friendly environment. This role provides opportunities for play, offers developmentally appropriate activities, and coordinates playroom scheduling.
Minimum Education: High School Diploma or GED.
Licensure, Registration and/or Certification: None.
Work Experience: Minimum 2 years of experience working with children.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
General understanding of normal growth and development in children. Ability to be detail oriented and to organize and prioritize work in an effective and efficient manner.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Facilitates normalization and positive adjustment of pediatric patients to the hospital experience by introducing and providing a variety of developmentally appropriate play and creative expression opportunities in playroom and bedside settings.
Ensures safety of patients and all participants during activities, special events, and programs and reports concerns utilizing chain of command. Develops and demonstrates a therapeutic and supportive relationship with patients and families, maintaining appropriate professionalism and boundaries. Manages the selection of toys and materials for playrooms, including ordering, receiving, storing, and distribution of supplies and donations.
Oversees playroom volunteers and assists in training/scheduling/opening playrooms. Maintains equipment and the working environment in a neat and orderly manner according to departmental procedures. Requests needed equipment and supplies on a timely basis.
Decision Making: Independent judgment in making decisions where alternatives are limited, and standard policies/protocols have been established.
Working Relationships: Coordinates activities of others (does not supervise). Works directly with patients and/or customers.
Works with internal and/or external customers via telephone or face to face interaction. Works with other healthcare professionals and staff.
