Position Summary

The Department of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, School of Medicine, seeks to hire a full-time child and adolescent psychology faculty member who will specialize in working with a population of youth with intellectual disabilities and their families or guardians. The psychologist will be clinically based in Butner, NC, at the Youth Behavioral Hospital (YBH) with occasional time also spent in a training and teaching capacity at the Department of Psychiatry Chapel Hill. YBH is a newly established and innovative 50 plus patient child and adolescent psychiatric hospital with four individual specialized units serving the children and families. The position is a faculty position with the University of North Carolina Department of Psychiatry. The Department of Psychiatry faculty is committed to clinical service, teaching and research and the department seeks to hire faculty with a commitment to this mission and to the service of people of North Carolina. The psychologist in this position will function as a core and vital leader for the child and adolescent units. The psychologist will function as a core member of a multidisciplinary intellectual and developmental disabilities inpatient unit.

Principal duties will include:

  • Support and closely coordinate mental health care with the other members of the team, family/group home, the patient's primary care provider (PCP) when necessary and, when appropriate, other mental health or specialty providers.

  • Assess patients for common mental health disorders and at times complete psychological evaluations.

  • Create and monitor implementation of short-term behavioral support plans and analyze weekly or daily behavioral data for crisis stabilization and to measure response to behavioral and psychopharmacological interventions.

  • Provide patient education about mental health disorders and available treatment options specific to this population.

  • Provide brief interventions using evidence-based techniques.

  • Provide or facilitate Social Skills groups, as clinically indicated.

  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings providing caseload consultation.

  • Facilitate referrals for clinically indicated services outside the hospital e.g., social services such as housing assistance, vocational rehabilitation, help families navigate / apply for eligible services such as the innovations waiver.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Master's degree in psychology

  • A minimum of five years of experience in the field

  • Experience and success working well in a multidisciplinary environment

  • Completion of an APA or professionally credentialed internship and at least one year of fellowship or supervised training in IDD/ASD

  • Interest and experience working with underserved hospitalized youth and their families

  • North Carolina Licensure

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

School or Clinical Psychology preferred. Applicants can also hold a masters' level LPA or BCBA degree with relevant experience. An excellent working knowledge of mental health conditions specific to the IDD population and evidence-based treatments for these conditions; experience with assessment and treatment planning for mental health conditions in this population.
