The Chief Surgical Physician Assistant (PA) is a state licensed, board certified, highly trained and skilled individual who is qualified to assist the surgeon in all phases of care for the surgical patient. Surgical services includes primarily urology and neurosurgery but also some oral-maxillofacial and ENT. The Chief PA manages a team of 6 PAs and provides liaison functions between PAs, staff physicians, administration, interdisciplinary departments, and external groups. The individual must possess a minimum of a bachelor's degree and be a graduate of an ARC-PA approved training program. State licensure is required as is continuous certification by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Continuous Basic Life Support (BLS) is required, and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is desired. Robotic skills desirable.

  • Take a patient history; perform a physical examination and make an assessment and diagnosis therefrom; initiate, review and revise treatment and therapy plans.

  • Order or transmit an order for x-ray, other studies, therapeutic diets, physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, and nursing services.

  • Instruct and counsel patients regarding matters pertaining to their physical and mental health. Counseling may include topics such as medications, diets, social habits, family planning, normal growth and development, aging, and understanding of and long-term management of their diseases.

  • Initiate arrangements for admissions, complete forms and charts pertinent to the patient's medical record, and provide services to patients requiring continuing care, including patients at home.

  • Initiate and facilitate the referral of patients to the appropriate health facilities, agencies, and resources of the community.

  • Order, transmit an order for, perform, or assist in the performance of laboratory procedures, screening procedures and therapeutic procedures.

  • Recognize and evaluate situations that call for immediate attention of a physician and institute, when necessary, treatment procedures essential for the life of the patient.

  • Perform surgical procedures without the personal presence of the supervising physician. Prior to delegating any such surgical procedures, the supervising physician shall review documentation, which indicates that the physician assistant is trained to perform the surgical procedures or personally supervise the PA until the surgeon is confident of the PA's competency to perform the procedure without personal presence of the physician.

  • Renew prescriptions for controlled substances in schedule II, III, IV or V in all settings.

  • Prescribe and administer controlled substances in schedule II or III in all settings, provided in all cases where the physician assistant prescribes a controlled substance in schedule II or III, the physician under whose supervision the physician assistant is prescribing shall document such physician's approval of the order in the patient's medical record not later than one calendar day thereafter.

Required Experience

Bachelors Degree: Major Pre-Med

Master's Degree desirable

License: State PA license

Certification Type: NCCPA/ACLS/BLS

Registration: DEA/CSP

5 but less than 10 years experience

Working supervisor for 1 to 10 employees doing similar work.

Requires extensive knowledge in several specialized disciplines and ability to integrate critical information from many diverse areas. Requires extensive theoretical and practical knowledge. Requires the ability to develop various policies, protocols, and communicate to various levels of the organization.

Contact with others is both inside and outside the organization. Requires ability to select, motivate and influence others.

What to do in applying broad policy to problem resolution is usually up to the incumbent. Projects and/or work may be assigned with considerable latitude for decision making. These jobs are subject to director level review.
