Union Tank Car Company (UTLX) is the leading design, manufacturing, full-service leasing, and repair services provider of railroad tank cars and other specialized railcars for North America.

ABOUT UNION TANK CAR COMPANY (UTLX) MANUFACTURING:

The UTLX manufacturing plant in Alexandria, Louisiana is a 122-acre state-of-the-art tank car manufacturing facility. Leveraging the in-line plant design and unique manufacturing processes, this facility produces standard tank car types in high volume. In addition to standard tank car manufacturing, Alexandria performs the following operations on-site:

  • Steel normalization

  • Interior coating application

  • Cold form head processing

Alexandria is one of the largest employers in Central Louisiana and is located 120 miles from Baton Rouge and 200 miles from New Orleans.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Chief Product Engineer, as part of the leadership team, will oversee the Product and Welding Engineering departments by leading and empowering the team to establish a productive and safe environment. This position will manage and lead the group's development, direction, and effectiveness, adhering to organizational policies and processes and supporting overall business and corporate objectives. The incumbent will provide technical replies to customer inquiries, maintain good customer relations, and work with cross-functional groups within various divisions of the organization. The Chief Product Engineer will ensure effective representation of the company on technical matters and appropriate industry trade organizations and governmental agencies by providing engineering liaison with them.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide optimum tank car design with timely and accurate drawings, BOM and other engineering documents.

  • Materials and metallurgical testing

  • Review design criteria with value engineering principles.

  • Develop and recommend new welding techniques.

  • Assure optimum welding and paint procedures are available for production.

  • Review existing designs for converting railcars for new usage.

  • Recommend repair procedures and alterations for tank cars.

  • Address potential design or manufacturing defects.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Mechanical Engineering degree required.

  • At least 10 years' experience in mechanical and structural design.

  • At least 5 years' experience in leadership / managerial role.

  • Regulatory agency communications including DOT, AAR, ASME

  • AutoCad, Solid Edge, MicroStation

SKILLS / SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of DOT, AAR and ASME specifications related to pressure vessels.

  • Problem solving ability focus in Engineering, Production, Quality, and Purchasing.

  • Continuous process improvement skillset.

  • Production and Quotation scheduling

  • Quality focus while managing multiple projects and timelines.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
