Metropolitan State Hospital is located in the city of Norwalk.

The Department of State Hospitals, Metropolitan State Hospital is accepting applications for Chief Physician and Surgeon, permanent/full time.

The Chief Physician and Surgeon shall assist in the supervision necessary to maintain high standards of general medical care and treatment of all specialty, subspecialty and outside medical services; monitors and evaluates all specialty referrals and clinical procedures; ensures their quality and appropriateness, including documentation and timeliness; supervises the work of medical staff and assists in the coordination of their activities with those of the Nursing, Psychology, Social Work, Rehabilitation Therapy departments, and other ancillary services; manages and supervises physician and surgeons. Assigns patients and/or units, creates work schedules, and provides consultation on difficult cases; advises staff either individually or by presiding at ward, and attends diagnostic and clinical conferences on appropriate treatment techniques for specific cases. Organizes ongoing educational program for primary care providers and trainees through lectures and clinical workshops; reviews clinical records of patients to ensure their adequacy and proper compliance with standards of care; makes regular ward rounds, special teaching rounds, and inspection tours to observe professional services given and the enforcement of hospital regulations; informs the Chief of Primary Care Services on such matters as trends in the incidence of disease, and needs for new or improved medical service.

Additionally, the Chief Physician and Surgeon presents recommendations to the Chief of Primary Care Services on such matters as hospital policy, new forms of treatment, the need for equipment and facilities and personnel and budgeting and provides direct medical care as needed when other clinicians are not available to meet the needs of the hospital patients/employees.

DSH-Metropolitan is an 800+ bed complex that provides a broad spectrum of inpatient psychiatric, psychological, and medical services to adult and geriatric patients of different legal status.

Knowledge and Abilities:

Knowledge of: Principles and methods of general medicine and surgery and skills in their application; principles of psychiatry and neurology; principles and applications of psychiatric social work, clinical psychology, physical therapy, the various rehabilitative therapies, and other ancillary medical services; current developments and trends in general medicine, surgery, and psychiatry, including mental retardation; principles and practices of hospital administration and personnel management;. Ability to: direct and coordinate complex and varied activities in the field of general medicine and surgery and analyze situations accurately and take effective actions.

Special Personal Characters:

Willingness to work in a state hospital; sympathetic and objective understanding of the problems of the mentally disabled and developmentally disabled; tact, patience; emotional stability; and demonstrated leadership ability.

Candidates must be willing to work in any Unit/Program and any Shift to meet the needs of the facility.

TRAINING EXPECTATIONS: If selected, it is mandatory that you attend New Employee Orientation (NEO) in its entirety. NEO can be scheduled up to 30 days for level of care staff (clinical).

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of the legal requirements for the practice of medicine in California as determined by the California Board of Medical Quality Assurance or the California Board of Osteopathic Examiners.
