Are you an experienced law enforcement officer or Park Ranger leader with a background in managing facility and park operations? Hampton's Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services Department is looking for a Chief Park Ranger to oversee the park operations and the safety and security of citizens, visitors, wildlife and facilities for the various City parks.

This position provides leadership to the Parks team and oversees patrols to ensure safety and compliance with laws, regulations, and policies, while also protecting the integrity of parklands. Prior law enforcement experience is required. The Chief Park Ranger manages and develops park programs, and oversees city parklands and facilities to include law enforcement and security, conservation, and maintenance.

Salary is effective as of July 1, 2024 Minimum Requirements Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Park Administration, Public Administration, Environmental Education, Forestry, Law Enforcement, or a closely related field of study applicable to nature park operations and management. Successful completion of the Hampton Roads Regional Academy of Criminal Justice or an equivalent state certified police academy required. Requires five (5) years of experience in park management, nature interpretation, outdoor construction, or law enforcement, preferably in outdoor recreation settings or closely related experience to include two (2) years of supervisory experience.

A combination of education and experience may be considered for this position. Must attain and maintain the Special Conservator of Peace designation. Must pass annual firearms qualification standards.

Must possess a valid driver's license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton's criteria. This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City's current substance abuse policy. Must successfully pass a Hampton Police background investigation to include polygraph examination, written test, and psychological testing.

Additional Requirements Requires effective communication with internal and external customers. May require working beyond a standard 40-hour work week to include nights, weekends, holidays and on call emergency standby. Requires frequent local travel.

The incumbent may be considered "essential personnel" during city emergency situations, or at the direction of the City Manager or designee which may include long hours and unusual schedules. Click here for a complete job description.
