Chief Operating Officer (COO) COH National Medical Center - Los Angeles /Orange County

The Chief Operating Officer, City of Hope National Medical Center Los Angeles/Orange County (COO-NMC LA/OC) is the executive responsible for overseeing clinical operations for: City of Hope Duarte (Approximately 5000 FTE) and Orange County (500 FTE) with a combined annual revenue of $2.4 Billion.

The COO reports directly to the President, COH LA & National Medical Center and the Physician-in-Chief, serving as a member of City of Hope's Executive Leadership Team.

Supporting California based entity-level presidents, senior leaders, management, and front-line employees in the importance of operational excellence and outstanding patient care delivery and research.

COO will leverage financial and business acumen to guide the growth and impact of City of Hope through evolving healthcare industry, research & discovery, and population health trends. The COO, in partnership with senior leadership, will provide market oversight, guidance and direction for City of Hope's California clinical operations, facilities and construction.

The leader in this role will maintains collaborative relations with regional and national leaders of health care, cancer research and other bio-medical (R&D) industry entities and encourages and oversees the development of organizational-wide collaborative programs in cancer treatment, education, and research.

As a successful candidate, you will:

  • Drive Performance and Operational Excellence the COO is responsible for performance, efficiency, and effectiveness of the established City of Hope clinical entities.

  • Supervise all clinical departments and leaders including but not limited to the CNO, Chief Pharmacy Officer, VPs of Operations of NMC and OC, and Construction and Facilities.

  • Lead the implementation of business plans for COH entities, programs and services while fostering a culture of trust, high reliability, safety, and quality.

  • Work closely with the President, Physician in Chief, and clinical leadership to support delivery of leading-edge patient care, superior outcomes, quality, patient safety and experience, clinical growth and expansion.

  • Develops short and long-term strategies and tactics to optimize the use of resources and systems to meet or exceed annual and long-term goals for growth and efficiency.

  • Provide decision-making and direction that aligns with the organization's strategic plan and priorities. Additionally, they are responsible for driving the optimization of the operations activities through creating and/or sustaining a positive, optimistic culture based on sponsorship, respect, trust, caring, accountability, teamwork, and the pursuit of excellence for the benefit of COH and its patients. The executive cultivates strong, positive, and collaborative relationships with clinical leaders, physicians, faculty, and leadership across the organization and serves as a champion for City of Hope's mission, vision, and values.

  • The COO is a member of the SLC (a system-wide senior leadership team), and as such will be a key participant in establishing a shared vision for the future growth, diversification, and upward trajectory for City of Hope at a transformational pace.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A master's degree in business administration (MBA, MHA), Health Care Management, or a related field.

  • Fifteen (15) years of management experience in a large acute care healthcare facility, system, hospital, comprehensive cancer care center or healthcare organization with at least five (5) years of leadership in an executive level capacity.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working in a complex academic environment, biotechnology, or pharmaceutical industry, balancing the mission of clinical care, teaching, and research is preferred. Experience leading within the State of California's healthcare regulatory environment. Executive management experience and record of accomplishment as a senior-level officer role, leading senior executives, within a complex major not-for-profit health care, scientific, pharmaceutical/biotech, or academic organization.

  • Display strong business acumen, a sophisticated knowledge of healthcare funding, and experience in competitive marketplaces with the ability to make complex and difficult decisions. Exhibit strong communication, presentation and listening skills to ensure organization-wide collaboration and coordination, especially as concerns physicians, employees, and the community.

    Expertise in leveraging data and analytics to inform projections and decision-making. Experience leveraging digital health and innovation to continuously improve patient and clinician experiences.

The estimated pay scale represents the typical [salary/hourly] range City of Hope reasonably expects to pay for this position, with offers determined based on several factors which may include, but not be limited to, the candidate's experience, expertise, skills, education, job scope, training, internal equity, geography/market, etc. This pay scale is subject to change from time to time.

    A 190,000 square-foot outpatient treatment and research center will open in the summer of 2022. The campus also will include Orange County's only specialty hospital focused solely on cancer, which is scheduled to open in 2024. City of Hope has partnered with the developer of the Great Park, FivePoint, to develop innovative strategies to Position Specification Ref: President City of Hope 3 embed healthcare services in master-planned communities focused on health living and wellness.

  • City of Hope Medical Foundation is City of Hope's physician practice plan. Comprised of more than 380 nationally recognized medical experts, the Foundation provides multi-specialty physician services to City of Hope National Medical Center and other surrounding hospitals and communities.

    The Foundation also manages clinical care sites in City of Hope's network, which includes 30 locations across Los Angeles, Ventura, Riverside, Orange, and San Bernardino counties to provide its unique approach to care in patients' own communities.
