Chief Human Resources Officer, Vice President for Human Resources and Payroll

George Mason University seeks candidates and nominations for their next Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO), Vice President of Human Resources and Payroll. This position will report to the Senior Vice President, Finance & Administration and is a key member of the executive leadership team. The CHRO will be responsible for working collaboratively across the university with key stakeholders to engage in a people-focused mission-driven organization that is in alignment with the strategic goals and objectives of the university.

The CHRO is responsible for these essential functions:

  • Providing oversight for $7.4 million departmental budget.

  • Leading and engaging a diverse & skilled staff of 70 who direct and manage the university's comprehensive Human Resources function.

  • Providing both HR & Payroll technical expertise and professional development and support to build a collaborative and caring team.

  • Contributing to the organization's effectiveness by facilitating continuous improvement, change and transition to support Mason's change and growth.

  • Chairing University-wide committees that measure and work to improve Mason's sense of collaborative, caring and well-being community. Quality of Work/Life and Family Matters are two of those committees.

  • Collaborating with Compliance, Diversity & Ethics, Risk Management, Information Technology Services (ITS), Provost's Office, and University Audit initiatives that impact the university-wide HR & Payroll functions.

  • Supporting and contributing to university governance groups through Faculty & Staff Senates.

  • Directing the University's 401A and 403(b) programs (which are opt-out from the Commonwealth of Virginia).

  • Chairing the university's Investment Policy Committee and provide annual BOV reporting.

  • Collaborating with Commonwealth of Virginia agencies with whom Mason interacts: DHRM, VRS, DOA, and SCHEV. Monitor legislative and Code of Virginia issues which relate to HR & Payroll.

  • Participating with VA Chief HR Officers Council & CUPA-HR as relevant University HR professional associations.

  • Keeping pace with innovations in the field and rapidly-changing federal and state laws.

  • Creating programming and professional opportunities for rewarding and engaging Mason faculty and staff, helping to support the application of Mason values.

  • Promoting and marketing Mason as a diverse, inclusive employer of choice.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant field and at least 15 years of progressive senior HR leadership roles.

  • A strong commitment to & experience with the values of diversity and inclusion.

  • A collaborative leadership style.

  • Customer service oriented (both internal and external).

  • Proven ability to revamp/modernize a large scale talent acquisition process.

  • Organizational design / workforce planning experience.

  • Experience with HRIS/ERP systems/technology.

  • Exceptional interpersonal, oral & written communications skills.

  • Demonstrate exemplary professional & personal integrity.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Public Sector/Higher Education or equally transferable industry experience

  • Experience with federal employment laws and IRS code benefit regulations, executive benefits and executive compensation, workforce planning, modernizing a large-scale talent acquisition process.

The Human Resources Coordinator will serve to provide assistance in all areas of Human Resources and day-to-day functions. Responsibilities: * Across Edelman Financial Engines: * Per forms customer service functions by answering employee requests and questions and providing public information or routing to appropriate HR personnel for resolution/answers * Assists with onboarding duties such as ensuring necessary paperwork is received, preparing materials for new hire orientations, ensuring handbook acknowledgments are completed, etc. * Mantain HR intranet site with routine updates * Organize and maintain personnel records and files, disposition as appropriate * Maintain Labor Law postings * Scanning and filing of employee documents * Assist with payroll processing and providing data as a backup' * Process sabbatical requests as received and apply to employee timesheets and record as needed * Front line support on Workers Compensation administration * Timely processing tuition reimbursement requests and escalate for necessary approvals as applicable * Handle miscellaneous items from outside vendors such as ordering service awards and other projects and initiatives as assigned * Supports the Associate Development team with on-site logistics for trainings, activities and events * Assists broader HR Team with various research projects and/or special projects as assigned * Performs other related duties as required and assigned Requirements: * A bachelor's degree in Human Resource or related field, or one to two years experience in the HR field, or any similar combination of education and experience preferred * Prior knowledge of principles and practices of Human Resources preferred * Prior experience with an HRIS database preferred * Prior experience in a customer service and confidential environment preferred * Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Outlook * Must possess exceptional organizational, time management, administrative, communication, and customer service skills * Ability to handle stress and interact with others in a professional manner * Requires effective oral and written communication skills * Professional demeanor * Computer proficiency (MS Office, HRIS) * Excellent attention to detail * Proactive and be able to multi-task * Excellent interpersonal skills, as necessary to work effectively with staff at all levels * Adaptability—the individual adapts to changes in the work environment, manages competing demands and is able to manage with frequent change, delays or unexpected events * Ability to work in a team environment is essential * The individual identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner * Possesses the ability to identify situations that may need further research and/or elevation to management * Position requires high level of responsibility regarding confidential information.
