The Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for establishing and leading the financial strategies of the organization and ensuring a strong environment of fiscal responsibility and enterprise-wide risk management. The CFO leads the Financial Operations teams, including Accounting & Financial Reporting, Financial Planning & Analysis, Treasury, Accounting Services, Procurement, and Travel & Events. The CFO serves as a strategic partner on the Executive team and assists in the development and execution of the organization's strategic plan and annual budget. The CFO is responsible for prudent management of the organization's financial assets in accordance with all associated board governance policies.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the CEO and Executive leadership on enterprise-wide strategic initiatives and resource allocation, including budgeting, forecasting, accounting, financial reporting, risk management, and internal controls.

  • Deliver clear, timely and actionable financial reporting, analysis, insights, and recommendations to Executive leadership and the Board of Directors.

  • Ensure adherence to financial transparency and accountability standards set by organizations such as the Better Business Bureau (BBB) Wise Giving Alliance and Charity Navigator.

  • Oversee financial strategies and controls to ensure donor dollars are allocated prudently, aligning expenditures with donor intentions and organizational priorities to optimize impact and maintain fiscal responsibility.

  • Implement management processes and policies to ensure core operational functions are in place and working effectively to achieve organization objectives and financial outcomes with a specific focus on modernizing the finance department.

  • Ensure accurate, compliant annual reporting of consolidated GAAP financial statements and IRS Form 990.

  • Ensure compliance with key Board of Directors policies, including investment management and oversight, the Strategic Fund, Risk Reserve Fund, and Long-Term Support Trust.

  • Work with Board Audit Risk and Oversight Committee in the management of the independent annual financial statement audit and other Committee directives as assigned.

  • Support Board of Directors Finance and Investment Committee oversight responsibilities on investment management, budgeting, and financial performance.

  • Ensure a properly functioning internal control environment over the receipt and disbursement of cash.

  • Oversee and review the preparation of all program financial reporting required for funding sources.

  • Optimize relationships and services of key third party financial and other professional service providers.

  • Support Executive leadership in management of critical program vendors and associated spend.

  • Lead, develop, and inspire all members of the Financial Operations team.

  • Empower efforts to drive continuous improvements in business processes, efficiencies, and cost control.

  • Other related duties as assigned.

  • Strong technical skills in accounting, financial planning and analysis, and asset management.

  • Understanding of non-profit accounting principles and regulations.

EXPERIENCE

Requirements

  • Fifteen years of experience in a senior-level finance position, preferably with a large and multifaceted budget.

  • Ten years of leadership or staff management experience.

Preferences

  • Seven years of experience in a Chief Financial Officer position interacting with Board Directors and Committee Chairs.

  • Five years non-profit or management experience.

  • Five years of experience managing budgets with diverse funding streams.

EDUCATION

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or related field.

Preferences

  • Master of Business Administration (MBA).

CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSURE

Requirements

  • Certified Public Accountant.

  • Valid state-issued driver's license.

Preferences

  • None.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • General office environment; temperature controlled.

  • Up to 25% travel.
