Director of Fiscal Operations
General Definition of Work
The Director of Fiscal Operations, under minimal supervision, performs senior level work with
extensive decision making discretion organizing, directing, and evaluating a wide variety of
financial activities while maintaining a robust and effective internal control environment. This
position provides oversight and leadership in the areas of accounts payable, accounting, auditing,
and purchasing. Employee performs advanced and supervisory work to carry out Board of Education
policies and procedures related to finance under the direction of the Chief Finance Officer.

Place of Work
The normal place of work is on the premises used by Durham Public Schools. Durham Public Schoolls reserves the right to require you to work at such other place(s) as it may reasonably
require from time to time.
Essential Functions
Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
Lead, manage and supervise/evaluate assigned programs/staff
Oversee and supervise the maintenance, control, and analysis of fiscal operations
Review all accounting entries for accuracy, analyze support documentation and approve of
documents in accordance with fiscal policies

Serve as district bank administrator
Serve as point of contact for external auditors
Calculate and submit the sales tax refund for the district
Investigate all issues with bank reconciliations and reconcile balance sheet accounts
Oversee procedures to assure compliance with financial laws, regulations, and requirements and
to assure adherence to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and standard business
practices
Coordinate process for year-end close out and to open new accounting fiscal year
Coordinate other audits that pertain to area of responsibility
Calculate, process, and order state and federal cash required for monthly payroll and accounts
payables expenses
Monitor financial file transmissions to outside agencies monthly
Resolve issues with banking institutions and software vendors
Collaborate and invest district funds to ensure adequate returns on investments
Complete local, state, or federal surveys and reports accurately and promptly
Participate in professional development workshops and leadership training
Create an inclusive environment with positive communication/public relations
Facilitate the development of the department's improvement plan
Perform related work as assigned or required

Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in business administration, Accounting or related area required
Ability to obtain/hold/maintain a NC School Business Officer Certification preferred
CPA certification preferred
Equivalent combination of experience and education
Special Requirements
Possess and maintain a NC Driver's License or ability to provide own transportation
Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
Work requires the occasional exertion of up to ten pounds of force
Work regularly requires exchange of accurate and detailed information through oral and written
communication
Constantly operates a computer and other office business equipment
Ability to remain in stationary position for required meetings/work
